Convention and AVP Training
The 2008 AMA Convention was, by all accounts, a huge success. Attendance was up from last year and attendees enjoyed Southern California's gorgeous weather. The 2008 event also saw the first-ever formal associate vice president (AVP) training.
District X's 12 AVPs participated in a two-hour seminar and received valuable training on AMA programs, member services, and operations. The meeting also presented the opportunity to recognize the district's senior AVPs for their many years of service to District X and our AMA members.

Staff Changes
- Don Gulihur (Santee, California) has chosen to retire from his AVP position.
- Tim Attaway (Chula Vista) has agreed to fill the vacancy. Tim has served many years as the District X contest coordinator for Southern California and will continue in the coordinator role while also providing AVP representation in San Diego County.
I wish Don well in his retirement and extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for a job well done.
New AVP Appointments
I want to welcome three others to the District X AVP staff:
- Jon Wilson (Ryde, California) — will provide representation for California's Central Valley and will also serve as the District X webmaster.
- Rick Maida (Morgan Hill, California) — fills the position previously held by Glenn Carter of Walnut Creek and will represent the clubs and AMA members in the San Francisco Bay area.
- Scott Malta (Merced, California) — is filling the vacancy created by the departure of Don Goeschl and will cover south-central California. Scott has also agreed to take on the task of tracking and coordinating flying-site issues within the district. Scott will work directly with the District X clubs and will serve as a liaison to AMA's Western Region Flying Site Assistance Coordinator.
On behalf of the district, my thanks go out to all of our departing staff members and I'd like to extend a special thanks to the new officers for volunteering their time and expertise in support of District X.
Till next time ... Keep 'em safe and Keep 'em fly'n.
