On the Fly
AMA Hosts Racing Celebrity
On May 25, 2004, Indianapolis 500 qualifier Felipe Giaffone stopped to visit the International Aeromodeling Center and decided that he wanted to make his first flight at the facility.
He had been an AMA member for slightly longer than a year and acknowledged that he was a rookie. Felipe wanted an experienced pilot to give him a few pointers on piloting his Sig Extra 300, and Programs Director Jay Mealy obliged.
Felipe qualified for the May 30 Indianapolis 500 in the 25th position, Row 9, with a 216.259 mph qualification average. He drove car 24, a Dallara-Chevrolet, for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, to a 15th-place finish.
