Flying Site Assistance
Share your observations at your flying site
You have probably noticed in past issues that I have periodically published my observations of member practices at the flying site for the benefit of others.
How about letting me know site practices, ideas, etc., that your fellow members demonstrate at your flying site? Let’s share them with other clubs. Send me information I can pass on to benefit others.
Another Veteran's Day at the Armory in Teaneck, New Jersey
On Wednesday, April 16, 2008, the Metropolitan Sport Squadron hosted its fourth annual Veteran’s Day at the Teaneck, New Jersey, Armory.
We entertained 16 wheelchair-bound veterans from the Paramus, New Jersey, Veterans Hospital. Most were veterans of World War II and Korea; some had flown combat missions in the war. Many of our members also attended, so there was much hangar talk between coffee, bagels, and donuts.
The club demonstrated many of our indoor free-flight (FF) and radio‑control (RC) aircraft and even had two of the veterans share a buddy box for some long flights.
We then supplied each guest with a rubber-powered model from the Guillows collection. Our members helped with the assembly and the flight trimming. We actually unearthed some 30-year-old 1/4 Pirelli rubber, sliced to roughly .180, for better motors.
Flights into the rafters got plenty of applause. Then a huge lunch, mostly provided by the wives of our members, was served to all.
The veterans left at approximately 2 p.m., promising to return next year. I’m sure our members left later on with very big smiles and a feeling of a job well done. — Don Ross
Letter of appreciation
