Flying Site Assistance

Tony Stillman | www.modelaircraft.org/membership/clubs/fsap.aspx

Hi, everyone! The flying season is heating up and I hope you are enjoying it.

I received good news from the Ute Radio Control Association. The club lost a flying field, but the Salt Lake City Parks and Recreation Department is building the members a new flying site. The efforts of this group have been noticed by the city, and the result is excellent support for the association. Many modelers in the Salt Lake City area will be thrilled to have such an excellent site at which to fly.

Member report

Rick Shane sent the following note:

"Thanks for your reply! We found out Salt Lake City Parks & Public Lands is building us a new air field with 14 covered pits, a shack, and a 650-foot runway. I have studied the plans, and it looks like it's going to be nice.

"It should be done in time to fly there this summer. It's located on 7500 West 1300 South.

"Thanks for looking out for us here in Utah!"

City statement

Salt Lake City Parks & Public Lands released the following statement on its website:

"Due to the construction of the Regional Athletic Complex, the Model Airport Facility that was previously located on that site is now permanently closed. A new facility will soon be under construction near 7500 W. and 1300 S. Anticipated completion is summer of 2011.

"The new Model Airport runway will be 60 feet wide by 550 feet long with a 10-foot shoulder on both sides and 50 feet overrun areas at each end (base gravel). There will be a gravel parking area for 92 cars, a 35-foot by 35-foot concrete helipad, a 55-foot by 315-foot concrete lay-down and set-up area with seven 14-foot by 14-foot shade pavilions, and a 12-foot by 16-foot shed with countertop window. The existing restroom from the old Model Airport will be relocated to this site. The footprint of this new site was taken from and closely resembles the old Model Airport."

Facility features (as stated by the city)

  • Runway: 60 feet wide by 550 feet long (with 10-foot shoulders on both sides and 50-foot overrun areas at each end; base gravel)
  • Parking for 92 cars (gravel)
  • 35 ft × 35 ft concrete helipad
  • 55 ft × 315 ft concrete lay-down and set-up area
  • Seven 14 ft × 14 ft shade pavilions (covered pits)
  • 12 ft × 16 ft shed with countertop window
  • Existing restroom from the old Model Airport to be relocated to the new site

This is a great success story that I wanted to share with our membership.
