Last month, I
discussed noise
and how it can
negatively affect
your flying site.
Well, we now
have a new noise
document that
everyone should
review. It is
document 927 and you can find it
under the AMA Documents tab on
the front page of the AMA website. I
recommend that everyone download it
and read it.
This is a topic that should be
discussed at club meetings or
informally at the flying field. Noise
affects everyone, especially the
neighbors! Don’t wait until you have
an issue to deal with. Be proactive and
work on ways your club can reduce the
noise footprint at the flying site.
Last year, I received a note from Bill
Panzeter, who is the president of the
Hernando Aero Modelers in Spring
Hill, Florida. The club was awarded a
$449 AMA Flying Site Improvement
Grant in 2011. Following is Bill’s letter
to AMA Headquarters:
“Thank you very much for our $490
grant for field improvement. This help
from AMA generated a mass donation
from our valued members to complete
the basic field. Our field is laid out to
exceed AMA standards of safety lines
as required. As you can note on the
pictures supplied, it is a great-looking
flying facility.
“We, as a club, have been chartered
over 30 years, and residing at Cemex
Corporation for five years. Cemex lets
us use the land free of charge and our
only responsibility is to donate to local
charity.
“In that vein, we have two charity
events a year and all proceeds go to
Hernando Cattlemen’s Association.
We usually donate over $1,000 in
scholarship money. Ten other events
are also held during the year. This
is due to our 115 members who
contribute much energy, time, and
money to make this an outstanding
club.
“I think the pictures will tell the
story. Our club’s motto is Fly Safe &
Have Fun!”
Thanks for the story and pictures,
Bill! I hope other clubs will read this
and be inspired to work hard for their
club’s flying site improvements!
Each year, AMA gives roughly
$40,000 to clubs in the form of grants
for flying site improvements. You can
find out more about this and get an
application from the AMA website by
going to www.modelaircraft.org and
clicking on the AMA Documents tab.
Select “Flying Sites” from the list.
The next list will contain the Flying
Site Improvement Grant application.
The deadline to apply is March 1 of
each year, but you can apply anytime
between now and March of 2013 for
next year’s grant.
If you have any questions, or if I can
help in any way, please contact me at
[email protected] or call me at
(912) 242-2407.
Have fun!
