Enhanced Taube
Weston H. Jenkins (118 Goff Rd., Corning NY 14830; E-mail: [email protected]) built his Taube from a Balsa USA kit, with enhancements based on John de Vries' excellent Taube book.
The engine is an Enya .45, and the covering is Micafilm. The propeller, wheels, and muffler are scratch-built.
"The airplane tracks straight on the ground and handles very nicely in the air, such that I would recommend it for any low-time flier," wrote Weston. "Flying slowly, it looks great; going fast, it looks absurd."

Dennis Merkel (1524 Camphor Way, Lodi CA 95242; E-mail: [email protected]) built an Ace R/C model designed by D.B. "Doc" Mathews.
Although Ace R/C no longer manufactures the kit, Dennis located the last one on the closeout shelf at Sky Hobby.
Originally designed for a 60 four-stroke engine, this 70-inch-wingspan model is powered by a Saito 56 Golden Knight. It has an Airtronics radio and is covered with blue and white MonoKote®.
"Now I am trying to locate a 4-40 or 4-120 Bipe, also designed by D.B. 'Doc' Mathews," wrote Dennis. He is a member of the Tokay Radio Control Modelers in Lodi, California.
Fokker D.VII
Dick (Farny) Farnsworth (10607 E. Arrowvale Dr., Sun Lakes AZ 85248) scratch-built this 1/5-scale model from a stunning plan (copyright 1991 by Gerry Yarash).
The upper wingspan is 78 inches and the lower wingspan is 69 inches. The model weighs 17 pounds and has a Zenoah G-38 engine. The machine-gun sound uses a 4 x 6-inch amplifier in the bottom of the fuselage.
The covering is Coverite™ with Model Master custom enamel colors. The lozenge camouflage was hand-painted using Replicraft drawings.
"It performs beautifully and is a real pleasure to fly," wrote Dick.
Loves his Models
This is Tom Yeamen's (1412 E. Munoz Pl., Placentia CA 92870) Great Planes Giant Aeromaster.
It has a U.S. Engines .41cc gas engine, and was covered with 21st Century® fabric and painted with automotive paint. The model has cockpit lights and landing lights.

Extra 300L

The airplane spans 87 inches and is powered by a Brison engine. The radio is Airtronics. Covering is MonoKote®.

Superfortress
Dennis Slater (5153 W. Melrose, Chicago IL 60641) built this Boeing B-29 from a vintage Aristo-Craft kit.
The 82-inch wingspan control-line model uses a three-line throttle system, but has electric dual bomb bays and a bomb drop. It's powered by four O.S. Max 30s with four-blade APC propellers.
The B-29 has 21st Century® paint and sports the nose art for Thumper, 87th Bombardment Squadron, 497th Bombardment Group.
"Finish is complete with panel lines, rivets, and a fully visible flight crew of modified and painted action figures from Kmart®!" wrote Dennis.
Little Dreamer
Ed Christman and Veldon Landis of Noblesville IN built Bob Jayne's (1341 Brownswood Dr., Brownsburg IN 46112) Gee Bee Dreamer bipe.
The model is powered by an O.S. .46 FX, and all radio gear is Futaba.
According to Bob, it is an outstanding airplane and it flies "as good as it looks."
Staudacher
This is Bill Welch's (215 Prospect Hill Rd., Waverly NY 14892) grandson Mathew McDougall with Bill's Carl Goldberg model.
The Staudacher is powered by a SuperTigre .90 and has a Slimline Pitts muffler. It has a Futaba radio and is covered with UltraCote®.
Blackburn Monoplane
John P. Radebaugh (106 Chase Ave., Cashmere WA 98815) built this 3/4-scale model from a British kit by D.B. Sport & Scale. The 1912 aircraft has a wingspan of 96 inches and a flying weight of 13½ pounds. It is powered by a .90 four-stroke engine. The radio is a JR PCM. The covering materials are varnished Covirite™ and polished lithoplate.
This vintage model was built for US Scale Masters team competition. Don Harris (Bandon OR) was the pilot.
"The aeroplane flies very slow and scalelike," wrote John.
Thunderbolt
Roger Jones (1777 W. Lark Dr., Chandler AZ 85248) built this Top Flite® P-47D with sliding canopy and all the Top Flite® options: replica radial engine, 108-gallon drop tank, and scale cockpit interior. He added Century Jet P-47 retracts and working flaps. The model is powered by an O.S. 91 SF four-stroke engine, with O.S. booster terminal and quick-disconnect fueler.
According to Roger, building time was four years.
"Don't worry; I had three other airplanes, so I was not kept from the flying field during this project!" he wrote.
World's Largest?
Jerry "D" Nelson (251 Shoreview Estates, Big Lake MN 55309; E-mail: [email protected]) sent a photo of his Lanier RC RB-1 King Condor.
"...it is their claim, 'world's largest rubberband powered airplane,'" wrote Jerry. "I just added the RC equipment."
The model's maiden flight was made with James A. Powers as the copilot.
The Condor spans 74 inches, is 56 inches long, weighs 27½ ounces, and has a 16-inch folding propeller.
Jerry used Balsa Products' APR-4FM receiver with Cirrus servos: a CS-21 for the elevator and a CS-10 for the rudder. The model also has a 50 mA battery.
"I would like to know if there have been any others who have flown Rubber RC," wrote Jerry. "Drop me a line."
Shrike 40 with a Twist
Fernand J. (Dee) Isabelle (2176 Emerson St., Gretna LA 70056; E-mail: [email protected]) poses with his daughter Ashleigh holding his Lanier aircraft.
"I took a Lanier Shrike 40 and added a twist—quite a few," wrote Fernand.
The 3.2-pound model has the standard Shrike wing design, but he put a little power under the hood. It has an O.S. .46 VR-DF for power, with an APC 9½ x 7 nylon propeller. It turns as high as 26,000 rpm.
"This airplane is a blast to fly!" wrote Fernand. "It does all you ask it to do and then some."
Susey Q
Harry Freeland (3591 Primrose Rd., 2nd floor, Philadelphia PA 19114) sent a photo of fellow club member Danny Banjock's (2912 Larkspur Ln., Secane PA 19108) P-51 control-line model.
The airplane was built from a design by Bobby Hunt. It has a 60-inch wingspan, weighs 63 ounces, and is powered by a PA .61 engine with a Smith and Werwage carbon-fiber tuned pipe.
A Dreamboat
Richard P. Flinchbaugh (7 Avon Ln., South Dennis MA 02660) scratch-built his Dreamboat from Ken Villards' plans.
The 55-inch-wingspan model is an excellent flier on land or water, using the Astro 050 brushless motor for power. According to Richard, eight- to 10-minute flights are common.
"With the park flyers being such a popular activity, some modelers might enjoy some pond flying," he wrote.
Fokker D.VIII
Don King (737 Zeiss, St. Louis MO 63125) scratch-built his 1/4-scale Fokker D.VIII with Bob Bruns and Charlie Webb, from plans by Scratch A Plane.
The model was designed by Wayne Jessee. It is powered by a McCulloch 28cc gas engine.
Don is a member of the Columbia RC Club, Columbia IL.
Baby Ace
Que Quigley (8730 Oakmont Dr., Boise ID 83704) drew the plans for his Corben Baby Ace Model D from photos furnished by the owner of the full-scale N4083, George Reynolds.
The model spans 86 inches, weighs 12½ pounds, and is powered by an O.S. .120 Gemini engine. Covering is Solartex and the paint is Rust-Oleum®. The scale is slightly more than 27%.
This is the 50th model Que has constructed since getting into radio control in 1982.
"A special thanks must go to Mr. Reynolds for taking the time to furnish me with excellent pictures from which I could prepare the plans," wrote Que. "Too often we find the full-scale guys don't want to be bothered with 'boys playing with their toys.'"
