Flying the Flag
Steve M. O'Hara (665 E. 82nd St., Bloomington MN 55420; E-mail: [email protected]) purchased his Great Planes Patriot in the summer of 2000. The kit was the last of its kind he had seen on his hobby shop's shelves.
The model has Hobbico retracts, is powered by an O.S. .46 FX engine, and is covered with UltraCote®.
"The covering layout was something I had visualized doing when I first acquired the kit," wrote Steve. "After September 11th it seemed even more appropriate to 'fly the flag' with this covering scheme."
Giles G-202
Dan Sutter (1944 W. Thunderbird Rd., Phoenix AZ 85023) built this 72-inch-span model from a Midwest kit. His neighbor Desirea Senia is holding the model.
The G-202 has a two-horsepower weed-trimmer engine powered by glow fuel and an 18 x 8 propeller. It is covered with EconoKote®.
The radio is a Futaba 6XA. The model uses an FMA Direct Fortress 2000 receiver, five FMA Direct 128-ounce servos, and one Futaba 3004 servo.
"On the ailerons it has pull-pull for better control with no flutter," wrote Dan.
Wildcat
Thane States (11182 Scullers Run, Tega Cay SC 29708; E-mail: [email protected]) built this 40-size Wildcat from plans by Jim Kats.
It is flown with an O.S. .46 FX with an 11.4 x 4 propeller and JR radio gear. It weighs between four and five pounds and is all stick-built.
The wings and tail are covered with MonoKote®, and the fuselage is painted and detailed with a permanent pen and decal stock.
"The Wildcat performs wonderfully, even for a novice pilot, and will do any 3-D maneuvers for the advanced pilot," wrote Thane.
Martin AM-1 Mauler
R. Murray Gransback (RR 4 Box 57A2, Montrose PA 18801) built his AM-1 from Claude McCullough plans through Radio Control Modeler.
The 10-pound model is powered by a SuperTiger 75 two-stroke engine, and it has a Futaba six-channel radio, Robart rotating retracts, and full flaps.
"The model's markings are from the only flying example left powered by the huge P&W 4360 engine owned by the C.A.F.," wrote R. Murray.
Loving's Love
Mark S. Glazer (202 Brownfield Ct., Cary NC 27511; E-mail: [email protected]) scratch-built this 42% model of Neal Loving's racer Loving's Love, which is shown with Mark's wife Shannon.
Powered by a 3W-120 engine turning a Fuchs 28 x 12 propeller, the aircraft weighs 42 pounds. It has a wingspan of 106 inches for a wing loading of 66 ounces. The radio is a JR.
"Unlimited vertical performance and rock-solid speed are the only ways to describe this airplane," wrote Mark.
