WELCOME TO SPRING here in the Northern Hemisphere. We’ve survived the “winds of March,” the “rains in April,” and the “flowers of May”; I think that’s how the song goes anyway.

It’s now warm more often than cold, and a trip to the flying field doesn’t require five layers of clothing. It’s been several months for most since we’ve turned on a transmitter or flipped a prop, so now’s the time to rehash all the safety issues.

You will no doubt be rusty not only on the sticks but also on safety issues and flightline etiquette, so be aware of your surroundings and neighbors. Take your preparation slowly and methodically so as not to forget those small details that can make or break the early part of the flying season.

Be sure to also check all aspects of your equipment, especially if it’s stored out in a shed or garage. Idle airplanes and radios have a unique ability to attract gremlins. You never know when a lowly mouse will take up residence in your fuselage and use the wire insulation for a midnight snack and your receiver foam for a bed. The time to find all this out is while in the shop on the table, not soon after takeoff.

Fuel is another important item that doesn’t winter well. Two of the three main ingredients are naturally unstable (why they make good fuel). Nitromethane and methanol will both vaporize at room temperature, so if you have a leaky lid, sooner or later the bottle will have only oil left and, in reality, if left long enough, most of the oil will evaporate as well; it just takes longer.

Nitromethane will be the first to go, so what was 15% fuel last fall could easily now only be 10%. To be on the safe side I try very hard to finish a gallon in the fall to keep from wasting it over the winter.

You might not think of fuel as a safety or flying issue, but I have found more than once that poor starting qualities and poor transition have more to do with fuel than the plug or needle adjustment. Often a fresh gallon of fuel will cure the most cantankerous of engines.

Techno Stuff: I’ve been getting several questions on noise lately from individuals and clubs. Nothing in particular but the usual—how much and what is legal?

First, you as an individual or club must know what is allowed by your local or county ordinances; there is ambient and property line noise. There is usually a maximum that is allowed to cross property lines, somewhere around 50 to 60 dB.

The easiest way to find out what you are putting out is to set dB meters at the property lines and check for a few days. The bottom line is, find out what is legal in your area and go from there.

The biggest problem with these types of issues is the required interaction between the flying club and its neighbors. The initial reaction from the club to someone having a complaint is key to the distance the issue travels. The more negative and unfriendly the response, the longer the road to compromise, if a compromise is even an option after the initial volley.

A wise word when a complaint is received: collect all the info possible, do all that you can to police yourselves, and be nice! I know how hard that can be—been there, done that. But it works!
