Focus on Competition
Technically Speaking ...
Greg Hahn Technical Director [email protected]
NEW RULE Book Cycle: For those of you who are interested in the rule book and what it contains or doesn't, there is a new cycle being tried for the first time. Actually, the cycle and procedures are the same; just the timing and submission have changed.
Rules-change proposals are now made online by using the Word template, available on the opening page of "Rule Proposals" under "Competition/Events" on the AMA Web site (www.modelaircraft.org). The template is also available as "333 (Word)" in "AMA Documents (PDF)." All that's needed is to complete the Word document and attach it to an e-mail and send it to either me or Michelle Lamb at [email protected]. The signatures page is no longer required to be completed—just the proposer's info.
I will view the proposal and check it for compatibility. Then it will be posted to the AMA Web site under "Competition/Events," "Rule Proposals," and the specific discipline for which the proposal is intended.
The timing change mainly has to do with the amount of time allotted for submission and then a shortened voting sequence. You now have until March 15 of the book year, or 14 months, to submit original proposals before the initial voting takes place.
What I hope to accomplish with these changes is to make the process easier for the membership to be involved and then keep the voting sequence short enough that the process won't get strung out over time, and the Contest Boards can accomplish their jobs.
There is a full explanation and chart of the process in the Membership Manual and on the AMA Web site at www.modelaircraft.org/events/ruleproposals.aspx under "Contest Board Procedures." If you have other questions or need something explained further, send me an e-mail and I'll do what I can.
Frequency Questions: Recently I've had several questions pertaining to if and when our 72 MHz frequencies are going to go away. I guess there have been several rumors traveling up and down the East Coast that sometime in the not-so-distant future, 72 MHz will no longer be legal for model aircraft use.
The fear of this scenario may be worsened by the fact that many of the larger modeling events, such as the Joe Nall Fly-In, Top Gun, IRCHA Jamboree, and so on, are now operating on 2.4 GHz only. That decision was made by the organizers of those events only and was not influenced by the AMA or a move by the FCC. The sheer number of participants attending those events makes the use of an impound much too time- and manpower-consuming.
I can say from the AMA's standpoint that there have been no attempts to ban, by or dialog with, the FCC or any other government agency pertaining to our use of the 72 MHz band.
I know there has been considerable concern from members also over the manufacturers' significant decline in producing equipment operating on the 72 MHz frequencies. But to our knowledge, there has been no talk of completely eliminating that type of equipment.
If there happens to be a change to these situations sometime in the future, we will inform the membership as soon as info becomes available to us.
