Technical Director Steve Kaluf THIS COLUMN IS BEING written middle winter first January 1996 midwest east coast being beaten severe winter weather have about 18 inches snow AMA HQ Hopefully weather will break soon can get runways cleared off weather hard put myself mind-set write column realizing will receive beginning flying season us . goes Some basic points consider getting equipment ready flying season primarily radio equipment engines includes concept equipment should taken care during non-flying months live southern California Florida some other warm year-around area can probably stop reading Please realize suggestions simply what have found work Without doubt ask ten different people about topic will receive ten different answers radio-control flier problems bit compounded since must also take care radio equipment radio system batteries probably subject failure caused improper little maintenance system equipped rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries recommended stored fully charged state storage area should cool dry Cooling batteries tends slow down reactions take place thus preserving Ni-Cd batteries should also cycled about once month during storage can done simply taking radio system living room watch TV turning entire system wiggling sticks until die 11 volts-per-cell typically regarded proper discharge level batteries translates 44 volts four-cell receiver pack 88 volts eight-cell transmitter pack two points about systems will begin shut down Some transmitters will continue operate down past 86 volts though An better way cycle batteries cycling devices currently market units safely automatically discharge packs proper level cases recharge Most cyclers have digital readouts tell long took discharge packs units well worth rather substantial price considering will probably save airplane time another also good time clean up radio get old fuel off transmitter case may surprised what color transmitter really Use rag dampened lighter fluid something similar clean transmitter case cases will damage plastic metal case system doubt double-check some unseen area good idea spray entire transmitter wifes favorite window cleaner tends cause electronics mysteriously cease function receivers receiver battery packs should also pulled out aircraft carefully inspected cleaned can use above methods cautions clean receiver its battery pack Look receiver make sure antenna lead still good shape lead should frayed bare areas might bad idea measure antenna make sure still right length found out time cat liked chew antenna wires Battery packs should inspected see lead wires good shape no corrosion exists around connectors connections cell cell still firmly welded soldered place Modern servos generally require little maintenance still good idea take look assure connectors wire leads good shape corrosion-free might also slowly turn output arm notice slack roughness gear train good indicator trouble looking place happen will have develop feel dont chance anything Engines also pose problems during periods inactivity However unlike radio system engines put away properly really wont require anything further until ready fly again Winterizing two-stroke engine fairly simple Start cleaning up engine toothbrush some carburetor cleaner seems work well careful carburetor cleaner highly flammable follow directions can Put very small amount fresh fuel fuel tank start engine Allow engine run out fuel stop Try restart no fuel lines connected make sure fuel burued up Drain fuel fuel system Plug lines residue cant leak out dust/dirt cannot get Remove glow plug open needle valve throttle equipped up fully put about 10 drops Marvel Mystery Oil glow plug hole Once oil pull engine through about 20 times evenly distribute oil Place about three drops venturi pull engine through again several times also like coat entire engine Marvel Mystery Oil protect moisture during storage 154 Model Aviation 4 Replace glow plug wrap engine loosely lint-free cloth coated oil prefer store engines cylinder head up tends keep oil messing up glow plug carburetor methods have reliably stored engines number years Some people feel oil can gum up left too long Ive experienced problem month two storage storing four-stroke engine addition above procedures should remove valve cover place couple drops oil valve train Four-strokes also best stored upright Dewinterizing engines normally very simple process start removing glow plug turning engine over several times see freely turns over still turning freely Ill often add fuel start engine will cough sputter little cleans oil out its system will run fine engine turning freely like flush out glow fuel through glow plug hole engine upside down drains also squirt some fuel up carburetor again engine upside down normally will clean out oil start engine Use caution dont get too much fuel engine thus allowing fill crankcase can cause engine lock up happens will have carefully work lock out engine inverted Don tforce you will bend break crankshaft possibly connecting rod four-stroke engines may also have flush out valve train removing valve cover inverting engine using bit fuel Use opportunity go over aircraft control linkages should carefully inspected assure still serviceable Control horns will wear out become sloppy replace anything questionable Control lines should inspected kinks wear wiped down alcohol Control handles should also inspected short look carefully equipment dont neglect flight box anything showing signs wear replace Impress flying buddies showing up field first flying day everything working Have safe fun flying season As always serve please feel free contact us concerns questions4COMPETITION DIRECTORY CONTEST COORDINATORS IRobert Wilkie 19 Everett St Technical Director Steve Kaluf THIS COLUMN IS BEING written middle winter first January 1996 midwest east coast being beaten severe winter weather have about 18 inches snow AMA HQ Hopefully weather will break soon can get runways cleared off weather hard put myself mind-set write column realizing will receive beginning flying season us . goes Some basic points consider getting equipment ready flying season primarily radio equipment engines includes concept equipment should taken care during non-flying months live southern California Florida some other warm year-around area can probably stop reading Please realize suggestions simply what have found work Without doubt ask ten different people about topic will receive ten different answers radio-control flier problems bit compounded since must also take care radio equipment radio system batteries probably subject failure caused improper little maintenance system equipped rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries recommended stored fully charged state storage area should cool dry Cooling batteries tends slow down reactions take place thus preserving Ni-Cd batteries should also cycled about once month during storage can done simply taking radio system living room watch TV turning entire system wiggling sticks until die 11 volts-per-cell typically regarded proper discharge level batteries translates 44 volts four-cell receiver pack 88 volts eight-cell transmitter pack two points about systems will begin shut down Some transmitters will continue operate down past 86 volts though An better way cycle batteries cycling devices currently market units safely automatically discharge packs proper level cases recharge Most cyclers have digital readouts tell long took discharge packs units well worth rather substantial price considering will probably save airplane time another also good time clean up radio get old fuel off transmitter case may surprised what color transmitter really Use rag dampened lighter fluid something similar clean transmitter case cases will damage plastic metal case system doubt double-check some unseen area good idea spray entire transmitter wifes favorite window cleaner tends cause electronics mysteriously cease function receivers receiver battery packs should also pulled out aircraft carefully inspected cleaned can use above methods cautions clean receiver its battery pack Look receiver make sure antenna lead still good shape lead should frayed bare areas might bad idea measure antenna make sure still right length found out time cat liked chew antenna wires Battery packs should inspected see lead wires good shape no corrosion exists around connectors connections cell cell still firmly welded soldered place Modern servos generally require little maintenance still good idea take look assure connectors wire leads good shape corrosion-free might also slowly turn output arm notice slack roughness gear train good indicator trouble looking place happen will have develop feel dont chance anything Engines also pose problems during periods inactivity However unlike radio system engines put away properly really wont require anything further until ready fly again Winterizing two-stroke engine fairly simple Start cleaning up engine toothbrush some carburetor cleaner seems work well careful carburetor cleaner highly flammable follow directions can Put very small amount fresh fuel fuel tank start engine Allow engine run out fuel stop Try restart no fuel lines connected make sure fuel burued up Drain fuel fuel system Plug lines residue cant leak out dust/dirt cannot get Remove glow plug open needle valve throttle equipped up fully put about 10 drops Marvel Mystery Oil glow plug hole Once oil pull engine through about 20 times evenly distribute oil Place about three drops venturi pull engine through again several times also like coat entire engine Marvel Mystery Oil protect moisture during storage 154 Model Aviation 4 Replace glow plug wrap engine loosely lint-free cloth coated oil prefer store engines cylinder head up tends keep oil messing up glow plug carburetor methods have reliably stored engines number years Some people feel oil can gum up left too long Ive experienced problem month two storage storing four-stroke engine addition above procedures should remove valve cover place couple drops oil valve train Four-strokes also best stored upright Dewinterizing engines normally very simple process start removing glow plug turning engine over several times see freely turns over still turning freely Ill often add fuel start engine will cough sputter little cleans oil out its system will run fine engine turning freely like flush out glow fuel through glow plug hole engine upside down drains also squirt some fuel up carburetor again engine upside down normally will clean out oil start engine Use caution dont get too much fuel engine thus allowing fill crankcase can cause engine lock up happens will have carefully work lock out engine inverted Don tforce you will bend break crankshaft possibly connecting rod four-stroke engines may also have flush out valve train removing valve cover inverting engine using bit fuel Use opportunity go over aircraft control linkages should carefully inspected assure still serviceable Control horns will wear out become sloppy replace anything questionable Control lines should inspected kinks wear wiped down alcohol Control handles should also inspected short look carefully equipment dont neglect flight box anything showing signs wear replace Impress flying buddies showing up field first flying day everything working Have safe fun flying season As always serve please feel free contact us concerns questions4COMPETITION DIRECTORY CONTEST COORDINATORS IRobert Wilkie 19 Everett St Technical Director Steve Kaluf THIS COLUMN IS BEING written middle winter first January 1996 midwest east coast being beaten severe winter weather have about 18 inches snow AMA HQ Hopefully weather will break soon can get runways cleared off weather hard put myself mind-set write column realizing will receive beginning flying season us . goes Some basic points consider getting equipment ready flying season primarily radio equipment engines includes concept equipment should taken care during non-flying months live southern California Florida some other warm year-around area can probably stop reading Please realize suggestions simply what have found work Without doubt ask ten different people about topic will receive ten different answers radio-control flier problems bit compounded since must also take care radio equipment radio system batteries probably subject failure caused improper little maintenance system equipped rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries recommended stored fully charged state storage area should cool dry Cooling batteries tends slow down reactions take place thus preserving Ni-Cd batteries should also cycled about once month during storage can done simply taking radio system living room watch TV turning entire system wiggling sticks until die 11 volts-per-cell typically regarded proper discharge level batteries translates 44 volts four-cell receiver pack 88 volts eight-cell transmitter pack two points about systems will begin shut down Some transmitters will continue operate down past 86 volts though An better way cycle batteries cycling devices currently market units safely automatically discharge packs proper level cases recharge Most cyclers have digital readouts tell long took discharge packs units well worth rather substantial price considering will probably save airplane time another also good time clean up radio get old fuel off transmitter case may surprised what color transmitter really Use rag dampened lighter fluid something similar clean transmitter case cases will damage plastic metal case system doubt double-check some unseen area good idea spray entire transmitter wifes favorite window cleaner tends cause electronics mysteriously cease function receivers receiver battery packs should also pulled out aircraft carefully inspected cleaned can use above methods cautions clean receiver its battery pack Look receiver make sure antenna lead still good shape lead should frayed bare areas might bad idea measure antenna make sure still right length found out time cat liked chew antenna wires Battery packs should inspected see lead wires good shape no corrosion exists around connectors connections cell cell still firmly welded soldered place Modern servos generally require little maintenance still good idea take look assure connectors wire leads good shape corrosion-free might also slowly turn output arm notice slack roughness gear train good indicator trouble looking place happen will have develop feel dont chance anything Engines also pose problems during periods inactivity However unlike radio system engines put away properly really wont require anything further until ready fly again Winterizing two-stroke engine fairly simple Start cleaning up engine toothbrush some carburetor cleaner seems work well careful carburetor cleaner highly flammable follow directions can Put very small amount fresh fuel fuel tank start engine Allow engine run out fuel stop Try restart no fuel lines connected make sure fuel burued up Drain fuel fuel system Plug lines residue cant leak out dust/dirt cannot get Remove glow plug open needle valve throttle equipped up fully put about 10 drops Marvel Mystery Oil glow plug hole Once oil pull engine through about 20 times evenly distribute oil Place about three drops venturi pull engine through again several times also like coat entire engine Marvel Mystery Oil protect moisture during storage 154 Model Aviation 4 Replace glow plug wrap engine loosely lint-free cloth coated oil prefer store engines cylinder head up tends keep oil messing up glow plug carburetor methods have reliably stored engines number years Some people feel oil can gum up left too long Ive experienced problem month two storage storing four-stroke engine addition above procedures should remove valve cover place couple drops oil valve train Four-strokes also best stored upright Dewinterizing engines normally very simple process start removing glow plug turning engine over several times see freely turns over still turning freely Ill often add fuel start engine will cough sputter little cleans oil out its system will run fine engine turning freely like flush out glow fuel through glow plug hole engine upside down drains also squirt some fuel up carburetor again engine upside down normally will clean out oil start engine Use caution dont get too much fuel engine thus allowing fill crankcase can cause engine lock up happens will have carefully work lock out engine inverted Don tforce you will bend break crankshaft possibly connecting rod four-stroke engines may also have flush out valve train removing valve cover inverting engine using bit fuel Use opportunity go over aircraft control linkages should carefully inspected assure still serviceable Control horns will wear out become sloppy replace anything questionable Control lines should inspected kinks wear wiped down alcohol Control handles should also inspected short look carefully equipment dont neglect flight box anything showing signs wear replace Impress flying buddies showing up field first flying day everything working Have safe fun flying season As always serve please feel free contact us concerns questions4COMPETITION DIRECTORY CONTEST COORDINATORS IRobert Wilkie 19 Everett St
