held Czech Republic next August could find no evidence anyone boning up Czech language looked like everyone spent summer preparing event Practice processing day Wednesday October 9 early morning weather looked typical Lost Hills time year mild slight breeze west Processing supposed held Economy Inn weather looked good enough three event directors Bruce Hannah FIA Jerry Fitch FlB Doug Galbreath Fl C decided move out field spent morning setting up two flightlines normal spot light winds north about 1/2 mile west anticipation wind west early morning rounds About noon wind surprisingly got quite strong turned field dust bowl everyone retreated town rest day Several weather reports showed wind being caused condition would probably blow itself out sometime next day everyone s concern seemed fairly mild night gathered new Multi Purpose Building Lost Hills School short meeting people Lost Hills should very proud beautiful new building should definitely keep mind future activities contest utilizes format has event flying two days timing Rather report day flying would like tell about what happened saw event FiB turned out contest survivors Thursday morning wind surprisingly calmed almost nothing early morning flights awesome highperformance Wakefields strutting stuff thought better prepare huge flyoff Performance new 35gram motor requirement spectacular day wore evident lot mistakes would also spectacular Thermals did seem easier harder find usual course can say thatI wasnt flying poor choice fly took its toll end day Mechanical failures gremlins played big part drops also heard several fliers breaking motors checking models before rewinding find problems after released Anyway 40 actually flew seven clean after first day second day FlB Friday October 11 weather almost carbon-copy Thursday seven perfect scores two dropped first round two dropped next two rounds gremlins left three survivors Blake Jensen Roger Morrell Fred Pearce stay clean rest day make No easy task though considering fate other excellent flyers credit made look easy except Blake stopped few hearts flew second model thirty seconds left last round three flew very well counted will make good team FlA event flown Friday Saturday October 11-12 level flying guys have achieved nothing short world-class weather spectacular both days lent itself high performance long-winged models normal amount line tangles screaming someone watch lines guys really good event seem bothered just go about business max max max think good half field truly expected would flyoff end first day 13 25 flew headed direction pressure flying finals bad luck took its toll second day five remained flyoffs Andrew Barron dropped heartbreaking second twelfth round cutting short bid second team spot row flyoff held 5 pm Saturday evening conjunction FlC flyoff Martyn Cowley Don Zink Randy Weiler Lee Hines Matt Gewaln world-class fliers no stranger flyoffs five-minute round found good lift maxed easily Because slight delay caused having squeeze FiC round seven-minute round did start until 600 time become evident lift would very difficult find sun being down less two fingers Lost Hills judge evening air holding arms out stralght seeing fingers between sun horizon anything less two almost assuring dead air five wasted little time getting air feeling light better chances Zink Weiler spectacular launches flights both doing five minutes Martyn Cowley skuaked finding ever-so-light thermalhe maxed Hines Gewaln flights 4/2-minute range just few years ago would have won competition no problem would have excellent team guys let us send three really too bad FiC think event competitive evidenced first-place Team award Hungary high-performance models seem get high enough can max almost air although Roger Simpson would probably argue point So name game seems dont make mistakes Ill see flyoff event flown Thursday Saturday October 10 12 have always thought one-day interruption would bother fliers end 14 rounds seven 21 flew made Some looked pretty lucky others looked like took video best flight ever just played back 14 times flyoffs started 530 pm Saturday did think flyoff would go very far because new five-second engine run rule being used flyoffs five seven managed five minutesactually quite handily Because FlA flyoff being flown conjunction flyoff sevenminute round flown until 615 pm less finger Ed Keck Randy Archer Bob Gutai still managed between six seven minutes rate guys going eventually will eliminate engine run altogether just hand-launch model everyone will ten minutes 172 Model Aviation about organization goal event directors create atmosphere fliers felt ease could perform best level tried accomplish instituting several new policies hope will become regular part Finals scene Put officiating table field middle flightline made convenient fliers get official word made everyone feel middle what happening Put flags pole name flier pole time Use board Technical Director Steve Kaluf THE YEAR 1998 coming although may critical everyone year 2000 hope seems significant Radio Control fliers Beginning March 1 1998 Radio Control transmitters operating United States 72- 76-megahertz MHz RC Radio Service Bands must narrowband Federal Communications Commission FCC regulations Surprised shouldnt information has put out other good things almost AMA Membership Manual know manual comes around January year plastic bag Supply Service catalog until last year member decal Okay know no ever seems read stuff lets review What exactly narrowband specification requiring transmitters operate fairly tight environment Narrowband has allowed enjoyment 50 frequencies during last several years technical description found AMA Membership Manual set forth Code Federal Regulations [CFR] follows 5331 Transmitter occupied spectrum shall better -55 dB 1- 20 kHz channel center frequency irrespective type modulation measurement shall made spectrum analyzer using 3 kHz resolution band width filter 5332 Transmitter emission frequency shall meet following requirements over range operating temperature power supply voltage a AM transmitters unmodulated carrier shall within 1- 002% channel center frequency b FM transmitters mean frequency occupied spectrum shall within 1002% channel center frequency c Other forms modulation required meet emission characteristics paragraph 5331 above slightly different AM FM specification result little dip middle FM waveform displayed spectrum analyzer opposed single curve AM waveform Therefore take mean occupied spectrum FM transmitters Im electronic technician please excuse very nontechnical explanations other transgressions making knowledgeable readers cringe Hopefully point still getting across two pictures may help explain Wave forms AM RC transmitter FM RC transmitter shown spectrum analyzer set up above specifications notice differences Both transmitters narrowband better understanding look information displayed vertical lines analyzer screen graduated 5 kHz steps centermost line represents proper frequency operation channel 26 723 10 MHz specification transmitters must within 1- 002% center frequency approximately 1500 Hz way kHz 1000 Hz MHz 1000 kHz Its easy see FM transmitter falls within specification wave form would have deviate 1/3 line away center line go beyond 1500-Hz approximation frequency counter like the picture usually displays information transmitter slightly off-frequency still well within 1500-Hz allowance horizontal lines analyzer display decibels dB graduated 10-dB-per-line increments ease use transmitter testing just close enough analyzer cause its wave form reach top analyzers display next specification must look wave form 55 dB wave form cannot fatter 20 kHz pointthese sidebands everyone used talk about Counting down 55 lines 55 dB top screen counting out either direction four lines 20 kHz transmitter also meets specification actually shows can go down almost 70 dB before exceeding 20-kHz requirement Therefore transmitter narrowband thats relief since its hope everyone can now remember what narrowband transmitters must meet requirement March 1 1998 transmitter narrowband avoid rush get done soon manufacturers offer narrowbanding service may direct service center does transmitter narrowband way operation can legal type-accepted FCC prior March 1 1992 Transmitters type-accepted FCC after March 1 1992 must narrowband transmitter information can obtained radios manufacturer transmitter marketed sold after March 1 1993 will narrowband since manufacturers agreed sell narrowband equipment after date AMA strongly recommends operating transmitters narrowband now original phase-in program has gone very long time 14 years everyone should up date RC fliers still operating original seven 72-MHz frequencies colored nonnumbered frequency flags Tou operating illegally doing yourself anyone else favor does matter fly yourself own field no other person around 200 milesyou still violation Communications Act FCC rules See section 503[b] Communications Act caught may have pay much $10000 violation up total $75000this makes updating transmitter seem very inexpensive operating illegallyand areI hope get caught Ive talked extensively about transmitter dont forget receiver really heart system comes interference FCC does regulate tight receivers must beits mostly worried about what put 170 Model Aviation ransmitter Spectrum AnalyzerFM Transmitter Spectrum Analyzer Frequency Counter 2 N e k air what take out However manufacturers AMA concerned have developed specifications narrowband receivers flying model narrowband conditions receiver better manufacturer-certified design operate such endangering aircraft everyone everything around next year would hope see some wording requiring put AMA Safety Code violators would covered AMA insurance up Executive Council decide Modifications transmitter CFR 95222 asks May make changes RC station transmitter answer short no allowed change plugin modules type-accepted part RC transmitter about What about flexible aftermarket antennas multiplexing modules other like devices transmitter accessories dont have official response would seem intent rule type-accepted part transmitter probably shouldnt doing t know couple flexible antennas provided radio manufacturers assume type-accepted installed something yourself check see its legal Hopefully beginning warm up area ever got cold Fly safely Till next time Limited Pemyplane Technical Director Steve Kaluf THE YEAR 1998 coming although may critical everyone year 2000 hope seems significant Radio Control fliers Beginning March 1 1998 Radio Control transmitters operating United States 72- 76-megahertz MHz RC Radio Service Bands must narrowband Federal Communications Commission FCC regulations Surprised shouldnt information has put out other good things almost AMA Membership Manual know manual comes around January year plastic bag Supply Service catalog until last year member decal Okay know no ever seems read stuff lets review What exactly narrowband specification requiring transmitters operate fairly tight environment Narrowband has allowed enjoyment 50 frequencies during last several years technical description found AMA Membership Manual set forth Code Federal Regulations [CFR] follows 5331 Transmitter occupied spectrum shall better -55 dB 1- 20 kHz channel center frequency irrespective type modulation measurement shall made spectrum analyzer using 3 kHz resolution band width filter 5332 Transmitter emission frequency shall meet following requirements over range operating temperature power supply voltage a AM transmitters unmodulated carrier shall within 1- 002% channel center frequency b FM transmitters mean frequency occupied spectrum shall within 1002% channel center frequency c Other forms modulation required meet emission characteristics paragraph 5331 above slightly different AM FM specification result little dip middle FM waveform displayed spectrum analyzer opposed single curve AM waveform Therefore take mean occupied spectrum FM transmitters Im electronic technician please excuse very nontechnical explanations other transgressions making knowledgeable readers cringe Hopefully point still getting across two pictures may help explain Wave forms AM RC transmitter FM RC transmitter shown spectrum analyzer set up above specifications notice differences Both transmitters narrowband better understanding look information displayed vertical lines analyzer screen graduated 5 kHz steps centermost line represents proper frequency operation channel 26 723 10 MHz specification transmitters must within 1- 002% center frequency approximately 1500 Hz way kHz 1000 Hz MHz 1000 kHz Its easy see FM transmitter falls within specification wave form would have deviate 1/3 line away center line go beyond 1500-Hz approximation frequency counter like the picture usually displays information transmitter slightly off-frequency still well within 1500-Hz allowance horizontal lines analyzer display decibels dB graduated 10-dB-per-line increments ease use transmitter testing just close enough analyzer cause its wave form reach top analyzers display next specification must look wave form 55 dB wave form cannot fatter 20 kHz pointthese sidebands everyone used talk about Counting down 55 lines 55 dB top screen counting out either direction four lines 20 kHz transmitter also meets specification actually shows can go down almost 70 dB before exceeding 20-kHz requirement Therefore transmitter narrowband thats relief since its hope everyone can now remember what narrowband transmitters must meet requirement March 1 1998 transmitter narrowband avoid rush get done soon manufacturers offer narrowbanding service may direct service center does transmitter narrowband way operation can legal type-accepted FCC prior March 1 1992 Transmitters type-accepted FCC after March 1 1992 must narrowband transmitter information can obtained radios manufacturer transmitter marketed sold after March 1 1993 will narrowband since manufacturers agreed sell narrowband equipment after date AMA strongly recommends operating transmitters narrowband now original phase-in program has gone very long time 14 years everyone should up date RC fliers still operating original seven 72-MHz frequencies colored nonnumbered frequency flags Tou operating illegally doing yourself anyone else favor does matter fly yourself own field no other person around 200 milesyou still violation Communications Act FCC rules See section 503[b] Communications Act caught may have pay much $10000 violation up total $75000this makes updating transmitter seem very inexpensive operating illegallyand areI hope get caught Ive talked extensively about transmitter dont forget receiver really heart system comes interference FCC does regulate tight receivers must beits mostly worried about what put 170 Model Aviation ransmitter Spectrum AnalyzerFM Transmitter Spectrum Analyzer Frequency Counter 2 N e k air what take out However manufacturers AMA concerned have developed specifications narrowband receivers flying model narrowband conditions receiver better manufacturer-certified design operate such endangering aircraft everyone everything around next year would hope see some wording requiring put AMA Safety Code violators would covered AMA insurance up Executive Council decide Modifications transmitter CFR 95222 asks May make changes RC station transmitter answer short no allowed change plugin modules type-accepted part RC transmitter about What about flexible aftermarket antennas multiplexing modules other like devices transmitter accessories dont have official response would seem intent rule type-accepted part transmitter probably shouldnt doing t know couple flexible antennas provided radio manufacturers assume type-accepted installed something yourself check see its legal Hopefully beginning warm up area ever got cold Fly safely Till next time Limited Pemyplane
