Focus on Competition

Record-Setting Performances: From time to time, as they are contested and achieved, I will be reporting on superior performances by AMA members. As I’ve stated before in my column, the AMA was originally organized for the purpose of managing contests and handling communications to the other governing bodies of model aviation. In other words, competitions and record setting were its reason for being.

Although competing has taken a backseat to social events now, there is still a dedicated contingent out there that lives for competition, and setting records is one of the ultimate achievements. This month I’d like to congratulate Mr. William D. “Bill” Gowen as the latest AMA member to achieve World Record status.

On February 8, 2009, Bill set a World Record for Duration in F1M (Indoor Free Flight) extensible motor (rubber power). The record was set at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The performance was a time duration of 23 minutes, 0 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 21 minutes, 57 seconds, set by Akihiro Danjo of Japan.

From all of us at AMA, congratulations and a job well done! MA
