Equipment you will need and how it works, what publications (magazines and books) offer Electric-modeling features and information, where to go on the Internet to find E-modeling information, what organizations there are to join, how to get started in E-power competition, what trade shows have to offer the E-modeler, and, last of all, what the future holds for electric-power modeling.
That's not enough? Bob also provides a list of E-modeling-product manufacturers. After reading this article you will know a bunch more about the sport and be armed with the information needed to find the answers to any additional questions you might have. It looks like that bar set by Dave Rees hasn't slipped a bit!
Bob's SOS article impressed us so much that we decided to build an all electric-powered-modeling theme issue around it.
This month's construction feature is a delightful Sport Scale version of the famed and fabled L-19 Bird Dog. Ernie Heyworth and Ed Lokken, the authors/designers of this model, come from opposite ends of the modeling hobby, but they pooled their knowledge to yield an easy-to-build, fun model for electric power. Their Bird-Dog is a blend of techniques and ideas that is almost too tempting to resist!
The second-annual Northeast Electric Aircraft Technology (NEAT) Fair coverage by Bob Kopski seemed a natural for this issue. I had a chance to attend the NEAT Fair, and I came away in pleasant shock about the giant steps this part of the sport has taken. The myriad types and sizes of Electric models and the sheer performance realms they have attained is amazing.
Capping the electric offerings in this issue is a review of SR Batteries' new electric Cutie kit. SR Batteries' president, Larry Shribnick, is one of those rare individuals who is driven to continually outdo himself. His kit line, like his battery-pack product line, reflects an attitude of offering the best possible product at a reasonable price.
I've seen the Cutie kit, and finished product, up-close and personal. While the finished model is impressive and certainly lives up to its moniker as a cute design, the kit engineering is absolutely fascinating. Larry's ingenuity and, well, cleverness shows through every part and subassembly. This is a fun model just to build. I won't steal anymore of reviewer Paul Bradley's thunder here. I'll just strongly suggest that you give his findings on the Cutie a careful read.
Please read and enjoy the articles presented in this special electric-powered-flight issue. It is my sincere hope that you will enhance your knowledge of the sport if you are an Electric modeler already, and that if you have never tried E-modeling, you will be moved to give it a try.
Feedback from Don Topping's guest editorial in the February MA has been, well, staggering. It seems that Don hit a few nerves with his thoughts on model building, and we have received close to 200 responses!
That might not seem like a lot in light of the fact that there are more than 160,000 readers out there, but, believe me, it is. Most modelers are not prone to respond to such editorials unless they have pretty strong feelings on the subjects expressed.
Don's piece centered on the joys and rewards of model building and asked the question of why it is seemingly in decline. Don also asked what types of how-to articles you would most like to see in the pages of MA.
Don and I would like to thank those of you who responded. Many of the letters and E-mails we received were several pages long, and they expressed personal feelings about the hobby/sport and related many fun-to-read modeling experiences.
The result of this is an unexpected informal reader survey that will help us immensely in commissioning and preparing how-to and construction features.
