The value of membership

Jay Smith

Yesterday I received my 2014 AMA membership card and decal. It was delivered to my desk and I stopped what I was doing to glance at the colorful lime-green border that surrounded my card. My eyes then wandered to a photo of Bob Brown, AMA president, and a statement thanking me for becoming a member.

I began thinking about the decision we must make toward the end of the year—unless, of course, you're a Life Member—regarding the renewal of your membership. I've made the decision to renew numerous times, long before I was employed by the AMA. Not once have I ever hesitated in supporting the organization that works to protect my right to engage in this wonderful hobby.

One of the benefits of membership is a subscription to Model Aviation magazine. Within its pages we strive to bring you coverage of all facets of aeromodeling. We have worked hard to improve the look of the magazine and to provide you the information the way you want it, in print or digitally, across several platforms.

In a recent survey of a portion of our members, the magazine was rated as the second most important benefit of membership, following closely behind insurance. In the same survey, 53% of respondents also indicated it was the only modeling magazine they read.

Although I'm proud of the survey results, I understand there is always room for improvement. The entire Publications team and I remain committed to continuing to provide you with a high-quality publication each month to inspire, inform, and instruct enthusiasts who share a passion for aeromodeling.

In closing, I want to take this opportunity to also thank you for being a member of the AMA. As you make the decision regarding your membership for next year, I hope the magazine will be one of many reasons you want to renew. If it isn't, I would like your input on how we can make Model Aviation better meet your needs.
