Dick Sarpolus is prolific in the modeling world

Dick Sarpolus is a prolific aeromodeler. He began modeling in the 1940s and was drawn to competition in the 1950s. In the late 1960s, Dick turned his attention to designing model aircraft for publication.

Although it may be difficult to determine the exact number of Dick’s construction articles that have been published in various modeling magazines, it is safe to say the total is in the hundreds. Model Aviation (MA) alone has published more than 30 of Dick’s designs, and this month we are proud to share two more of his creations: the Big C and Thermic '13.

You can purchase plans for Dick’s models through the AMA Plans Service:

If you would like to learn more about Dick, be sure to read this month’s “I Am the AMA” and check out his autobiography at www.modelaircraft.org/files/SarpolusRichardWDick.pdf. The summer issue of Park Pilot will also feature one of Dick’s construction articles, the Lockheed T-33. It will be available for free download at www.TheParkPilot.org.

Maker Faire Detroit

The Henry Ford Museum is hosting the Detroit Maker Faire in Dearborn, Michigan, on July 26 and 27. This snippet comes from the event website: “More than 400 makers will bring their wares, ideas, inventions, and solutions to this two-day festival offering everything from robots, flame shooters, and animatronics to solar-powered mechanical sculptures and fashionable finds.”

AMA will have a booth at the show and I will be attending to cover the event with photos and interviews showcasing all things aeromodeling related. If you happen to attend, please stop by the AMA booth and say hello.
