Midwest Products — The Sorcerer

This is Midwest Products' first indoor competition kit. Designed by Science Olympiad Aerospace Supervisor Tom Sanders to comply with national middle school and high school flying competitions, the Sorcerer offers many unique features to assist the flying novice.

  • Includes the industry's first laser-cut indoor ribs, spoked wheels, and gussets.
  • Features two sizes of propellers (four total), Esaki tissue, and premium micro-cut quality balsa, with enough materials for two models.
  • An uncluttered plan with isometric views of critical components helps the novice understand many new concepts.
  • Extensive build and flying instructions disclose optional techniques and design modifications so the flier could build a unique design.
  • The basic model uses a two-piece fuselage (motor stick-and-tailboom system) and a removable parasol wing for faster trim adjustments and safer travel storage.
  • Average flying weight is 10 grams or less.

The Sorcerer is a winning design that can teach any novice to make his or her first two-minute-or-more indoor flight.

For additional information, contact Midwest Products at (800) 348-3497, or E-mail [email protected].

  • The Sorcerer kit (#525) is $29.95 + S&H.

Ray Banks — Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Ray Banks, 2831 Orthello Way, Santa Clara CA 95051; Tel.: (408) 243-7044.

These brakes were designed for a 114-inch Ziroli P-38 with 10-inch Robart struts. They will also fit the P-61 Black Widow, an A-20 Invader, a 118-inch B-25 and B-29, and any six- to 10-inch Robart straight leg strut.

  • Tires: six inches in diameter, with 3½-inch-diameter Reed wheels.
  • Design: floating- or sliding-caliper.
  • Caliper: 1/2-inch-diameter piston, bleeding port, and uses a quad-seal O-ring (more efficient at sealing, less resistance against the piston). The caliper slides into the slots of the mount and onto the bushings that hold the caliper to the mount.
  • Rotors: three inches in diameter and drilled (probably not needed, but has a nice effect).
  • Brake pads: stainless steel with friction material used in automatic transmission clutches.
  • Master cylinder: an air/oil cylinder.
  • Operation: Throw from rolling to lockup is roughly 1/4 inch. Brakes are actuated when down-elevator is applied.
  • Materials: all parts are aluminum, except for the piston, bushings, and hardware.
  • Weight: total weight of both assemblies is 12 ounces.
  • Fluid: transmission fluid is used as brake fluid (less caustic to paint, and brakes will never see car-brake temperatures).
  • Regulator: installed in case of a pressure differential, but initial testing indicates this is not needed.

These brakes are one of a kind. Unless many are ordered, the cost will be high — approximately $1,600 for a set. They can be downsized for smaller struts.
