President's Perspective - 2012/10

Author: Bob Brown

Edition: Model Aviation - 2012/10
Page Numbers: 6

The RC Pylon Special Interest
Group, the National Miniature
Pylon Racing Association
(NMPRA), recognizes the enormous
contributions made by Cliff and Nancy
Telford each year during the Nats. A
raffl e was held for a complete Quickie
airplane and radio during
this year’s event.
This raffl e generated
more than $4,600 for
the Telford scholarship
fund. An anonymous
member matched the
donation, creating a total
of more than $9,200 for
the scholarship fund.
This gesture illustrates
the positive efforts
exhibited by members
of the Academy. Thanks to all who
participated.
The EAA recognized the Academy
for its members’ participation in the
Young Eagles program. The program has
introduced thousands of young aviation
enthusiasts to aeronautics by providing
a ride in a full-scale aircraft. AirVenture
in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, was attended by
a large number of AMA members.
KidVenture was a venue where
youngsters were introduced to aviation
through models. AMA members
introduced building techniques, Control
Line fl ying, and Radio Control fl ying to
thousands of kids. We also introduced
the AMA to those visiting EAA’s
AirVenture Museum.
In the future, you may be able to
view videos of some of our members’
experiences with full-scale and model
aviation. Anyone interested in aviation
should put AirVenture on his or her
calendar. It’s unbelievable!
Camp AMA was a positive experience
this year. The varied student abilities
and windy weather provided a
challenge to the staff; however, all
turned out well.
Two clubs provided the camp tuition
expense to worthy club members. I
hope this can
become a goal
for your club.
The friendships
generated
continue today and hopefully will in
the future. The students and teachers
remain in contact via email and a
YouTube page.
A special thank-you is extended
to Texas Roadhouse and Applebee’s
restaurants in Muncie, Indiana, for
providing free food to the camp
attendees. If you are ever in Muncie,
please support those restaurants and
express your appreciation.
Jessy Symmes, the Education
Coordinator, deserves a big thank-you
for acting as “mom” for the camp.
In the future, you will be receiving
your renewal notice. Members in
Districts II, III, IV, VI, VIII, and X will
also receive a ballot for vice presidental
elections.
All of the candidates have the
required credentials, but have different
backgrounds and desires. I urge you to
read the campaign statements beginning
on page 140 in this month’s MA or on
AMA’s website.
Ballots can be returned in conjunction
with dues payment since the ballots are
being counted at AMA Headquarters.
We are attempting to curtail voter
apathy; please vote.
