RC PILOT MAGAZINE APP

The digital era continues to introduce new electronic opportunities. Experts predict that within a few years more people will get information using mobile devices, including tablets, than desktop computers (Morgan Stanley; Mashable, 2011). The Academy of Model Aeronautics is part of a new communication vehicle that capitalizes on this mobile trend: the RC Pilot magazine app.

RC Pilot is a tablet magazine app for Apple and Android devices. It retains the beauty and structure of the printed magazine while incorporating rich media native to mobile devices, including videos and interactive photos. Each issue focuses on people — pilots, industry players, professional pilots, events, and flying clubs — told through text, videos, photos, and multimedia. Subscribers also get an AMA feature that keeps readers informed about important issues concerning model aviation.

  • Single issue: $3.99 (iTunes Newsstand or Android Marketplace)
  • Annual subscription: $24.99

HANSEN SCALE AVIATION VIDEOS

Dick Hansen is a lifelong modeler and was inducted into the Academy of Model Aeronautics Model Aviation Hall of Fame in 2010. Since the early 1990s he has traveled to numerous full-scale and RC modeling events and documented them on video.

Coverage includes IMAA events, USSMA gatherings, QSAA events, FAI championships, IMAC contests, and Top Gun, plus full-scale museum tours. Hansen Scale Aviation has released 117 DVDs with run times of 1.5 to 2 hours each; footage is narrated by Dick.

One highlighted DVD (volume 112) includes the 2010 U.S. Scale Masters Championships, a 2010 visit to the EAA museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and the Vintage Aero Flying Museum at Fort Lupton, Colorado. Each DVD costs $9.95 and includes free shipping to the U.S. and Canada.

Although the footage has a “home movie” feel and is less polished than some commercial releases, Dick’s enthusiasm, extensive coverage, and low cost make the series a valuable resource for scale modelers.

CURTISS-WRIGHT CADETTES — Flying Into Yesterday

Author Jean‑Vi Lenthe, daughter of one of the Curtiss‑Wright Aeronautical Engineering Cadettes, uncovers the story of 918 women trained during World War II to design airplanes. Their work helped the Curtiss‑Wright Airplane Company overcome engineering deficiencies during a national crisis, but the Cadettes have largely gone unrecognized — partly because many records of their participation were mysteriously lost.

Lenthe’s book documents her search for information, including visits to the Curtiss‑Wright plant in Ohio, Purdue University (where several Cadettes trained), archives, museums, and surviving Cadettes. The 208‑page book includes 16 pages of photographs and is recommended for readers interested in aviation history, aeronautical engineering, or women’s studies.
