Radio Control PYLON RA CING Bill Hager THERE HAS BEEN no FAI Pylon Racing country years have some time now new set rules aimed getting us interested again seemed though no going take first step hold race say Lets see what happens have start somewhere Well looks though someone has taken first step report sent Art Arro US renaissance FAT Pylon Racing occurred July 10 1982 Harrisburg PA ws first FAI event under new rules almost decade since previous race type held US FAI Pylon merged Northeast Quarter Midget Championships hosted West Shore Flying Society Dave Latsha Contest Director both Quarter Midget FAI 15 entries QM five FAI fair considering last-minute addi tion latter event Three FAT contestants came Michigan remainder Pennsylvania Connecticut event run according current rules exceptions No restriction wheel width 2 No requirements cowled engines 3 Course length same AMA Formula PAl rules relaxed allow eligibility suitably-muffled Formula I-type aircraft Also field surveyed Formula specifications since prac tical resurvey special metric course FAI difference total distance less 1% felt times would repre sentative Four FAI entries conventional Formula aircraft addition suitable muffling devices contestant flew special P-Si Mustang built new PAl specifica tions aircraft employed conventional fixed landing gear engines reworked some extentgenerally experiment various deck clearances head shapes operate no-nitro fuel Three aircraft sported tuned pipes muffled tuned pipes either 75cc 85cc sizes Magic Muffler used remainder props standard wooden Formula types diameters reduced 8 less FAI flying began mid-afternoon after five rounds QM flown after course lengthened Formula distance weather very hot humid slight tailwind present Five complete rounds consisting 2- 3plane heats flown very few flameouts due poor engine setting although contestant experienced four unscheduled landings due pinhole leak fuel line Other zeroes caused nose-overs takeoff due tailwind condition completion five rounds results showed Dave Latsha 396 points Wayne Yeager 3857 points Art Arro 3417 points Joe Cohen 2650 points Bob Wallace 976 points Note FAI scoring system used figures repre sent sum elapsed times four fastest flights Corrections elapsed times due cuts made starting line sums tallied afterwards overall fast time flown Dave Latsha 1332 lessons learned
