Joyce Hager — Executive Director

The United States team did well in the 2004 Scale World Championships. In Control Line Scale — F4B — the US team placed third out of the eight teams competing. In Radio Control Scale — F4C — the team placed 11th out of the 18 entered in the championships. Congratulations to all the competitors and their helpers. Thank you to the supporters accompanying the team and the many people, clubs, and sponsors who made the trip to Deblin, Poland, possible.

The 2004 Control Line World Championships held in Muncie, Indiana, will be covered elsewhere in this issue.

Attention Leader Members

Most of you probably don’t follow or read the Executive Council minutes, but there is important information provided in these documents. They can be located on the AMA website at www.modelaircraft.org or you may request a copy by mail.

Via email, I sent information concerning the AMA National Safety Code to 1,632 Leader Members of the Academy. An ad hoc committee has made an effort to “clean up” the existing Safety Code without changing the intent of the rule.

I am requesting that Leader Members review the document and provide input. The rewritten Safety Code is at www.modelaircraft.org/surveys/safetyreview.aspx. There is an area for Leader Members to provide comments. I am looking for one of three responses:

  1. I agree with the rewrite.
  2. This could be worded differently to make it more understandable to the average modeler.
  3. Suggest changes that can be reviewed by the Safety Committee and presented to the Executive Council for possible additions or deletions in the 2006 Safety Code.

We chose to send this information using email because it reduces the cost for postage and allows for a quicker response time. For those who do not have daily access to the web, I will be glad to mail you a copy of the information and would still like to hear from you.

In today’s world, the Internet is becoming the fastest way to get information out to an association’s general membership. Again, I ask that you provide AMA with your email address and keep us informed of changes.

Approximately half of the Leader Members have email addresses, but I found that some also have spam blockers. I received messages such as: “Your mail to John Doe with the subject ‘Safety Code Revision’ has been blocked by the Friends system. John Doe only accepts email from people on a list of approved senders to minimize spam and you are not currently on this list.” Please be sure to include AMA on your approved senders list.

Automation is the way of the future. Currently you can renew your membership or sign up as a new member online. Renewals need to have a current email address in AMA’s database and a password is required. Don’t wait until the last minute; sign up now and get your password.

After receiving your password and signing up for 2005 membership, remember that license cards will be issued beginning in October. Beat the rush, but remember to vote when you receive your bill and ballot for 2005. All ballots must be mailed to the auditor to be valid.

The International Radio Control Helicopter Association (IRCHA) held its World Jamboree at AMA Headquarters in Muncie, August 12–15. There were 438 pilots who flew in the event, making its 11th year the biggest yet.

We had super weather and many compliments on the site. For a number of people, this was their first visit. Eighteen flight stations were set up, encompassing the entire back road. I believe that the IRCHA Jamboree is currently the largest fly-in in the world.

Happy flying,

Joyce Hager Executive Director [email protected]
