Top Flite P-40 brings historical enjoyment
Glenn Baker (geebee7676@aaahawk.com) sent us this shot of owner/builder Darrell Abby (darrellabby@att.net), posing with and preparing his Top Flite P-40 for flight.
Glenn noted that the exquisite P-40 was Darrell’s first venture into building a Giant Scale airplane. Powered by a DLE-55, the P-40 has Robart retracts and is controlled by a Futaba radio. Extra scale details were added, including an elaborate cockpit.
Darrell flies mostly at the Greater Southwest Aeromodelers of Fort Worth, Texas. Glenn wrote that Darrell commented, “I have enjoyed studying the history of the Flying Tigers with their P-40s in China at the beginning of World War II, in conjunction with building and flying this aircraft.”
Glenn included a YouTube link (www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfVJRPrbz1c) to a video of Darrell’s P-40.
Glenn used a Sony SLT-A55V to capture the photos. The images were shot in Aperture Priority with ISOs of 100 and 200, and f-stops of f/4.5 and f/11 at 1/400 and 1/160 second, respectively.
