When nature turns cruel AMA members help each other - 2012/08

Edition: Model Aviation - 2012/08
Page Numbers: 141

The Academy has your back, even when disaster strikes.
Last year, March went out like a lion in the Tampa, Florida, area. Fierce
thunderstorms and tornadoes wreaked havoc across southwestern
Florida, including the nearby Sun ’n Fun full-scale y-in where there
were overturned airplanes and injuries.
The ying site for the Hernando Aero Modelers, north of Tampa,
was also a mess. “We lost our metal storage building, metal canopy
supports, and all the soft goods stored in the building,” said club
president Bill Panzeter. “We had to spend over $3,500 rebuilding
our support area, now at hurricane strength. Our thanks to AMA for
helping us out.”
The Academy’s Club Disaster Assistance program is just one of many
ways AMA helps support clubs, especially those with dire needs such
as the Hernando Aero Modelers. Clubs may apply for a grant from
AMA to receive funds up to $500 to help them recover.
Someday, it might be your club in need. If it happens, thanks to
donations from clubs and members, the cruelty of nature can be
made a little less so.
