"Kit Splashing"
Ken Hoak (14706 Carnation Dr., Tampa FL 33613; E-mail: [email protected]) calls this Radio Control effort "Kit Splashing" (instead of kit bashing). It's a modified Sig Mid-Star 40 built to fly off water.
The model is powered by a GP-42 engine and it has 33-inch Gee Bee floats. The radio is a four-channel Futaba running dual wing servos.
The stars on the model were hand-cut from white MonoKote® and heat-applied to the blue MonoKote® background.
Gee Bee Z
"With a Byron Wedell-Williams Racer already in my stable, I thought I needed something even more difficult to fly," wrote Rich Cox (3763 Sunset Knolls Dr., Thousand Oaks CA 91362).
His Adrian Page-designed Gee Bee Z was built from a Hobby Hangar kit. It has a 57-inch wingspan and is powered by an O.S. 52 four-stroke engine.
The built-up fuselage and wing are covered with Sig Koverall, and Stits paint was used for the finish.
Modifications included substituting the flimsy stock plastic cowl and wheel pants with aftermarket fiberglass units. To help the scale appearance, Rich added an FTE resin-cast dummy engine and Jerry Nelson streamlined flying wires.
"One of a Kind"
Norman Wampler (8311 Lesley St., Tallahassee FL 32310) scratch-built this 16-foot-wingspan model. It took him 1½ years to complete.
The 38-pound airplane is powered by a Zenoah G-62 gas engine, and, according to Norman, it flies beautifully.
It took 12 rolls of MonoKote® to cover the model, and a trailer had to be built to transport it to the field.
Bronco
Gale C. Sherman's (14417 Shirley Cir., Omaha NE 68144) OV-10A Bronco ground attack support/observation aircraft was built from Rich Uravitch plans. The color scheme and markings are of Light Attack Squadron Four (VAL-4), Bien Thuy Detachment, summer 1971.
The ½-scale model weighs 12 pounds and is powered by two O.S. .46 FX engines with Master Airscrew 12 x 6 three-blade propellers. The model is covered with Dove Gray MonoKote® with panel lines and is clear-coated with Flat Clear LustreKote®.
The OV-10 features spring Air retracts, flaps, and has 11 servos. Guidance is provided by a Futaba eight-channel UAF radio.
