14 MODEL AVIATION
Model stands are
handy when you’re
working on aircraft at
home or at the field.
However, those of us
who fly larger
aircraft, roughly 50cc
in size, didn’t have
much in the way of
options. We were
happy to see Extreme Flight address this need and release the 4
in 1 stand, which is designed to work with round and
“standard”-shaped fuselages.
The 4 in 1 features different-size
and -shape padded openings on
each of its four sides, to
accommodate a wide variety of
models. Simply flip the stand to the
size needed.
We have seen it used for aircraft
as large as 100cc and are showing
it here with a 50cc airplane for
reference. The stand comes with
padding installed and only needs to
be bolted together with the
included hardware.

If you are flying any of the
ParkZone or E-flite microsize
offerings, you are most likely
using several flight batteries
that need to be charged. Eflite’s
new Celectra charger
makes things much more
convenient, with the
ability to charge as
many as four 1S
batteries.
The four ports can be
used simultaneously or separately and have independent
circuits, allowing batteries with different capacities to be
charged together.
The Celectra runs off of four D-size batteries or can be
powered using the optional E-flite AC adapter. For safety, the
batteries can be inserted into the charger only one way,
ensuring proper polarity. Charging 70-110 mAh-capacity
batteries takes 30-40 minutes, and charge status is displayed
using an LED for each port.
We found the charger to be simple to use, and we
appreciate the ability to use AC power, when available, with
the option to switch to battery power. This has us covered no
matter where we’re flying.
Being able to charge four batteries at once provides for
uninterrupted flying and ensures that our models are ready
when we are.

This isn’t your father’s
Dremel! This new
4000 model has the
most power of any
of the company’s
rotary tools to
date. It breaks
from the norm
with an on/off
switch that is
separate from the
speed-control dial,
allowing you to use a set speed each time, if you want. This tool
even features electronic feedback circuitry, enabling it to
perform consistently at all speeds.
The 4000 pays respect to those that have come before it; it
can use all existing Dremel accessories and attachments, as well
as high-performance attachments to complete the widest range
of projects. It is available in several attachment configurations,
including a front grip that allows for a greater level of precision,
a circle cutter, and a straightedge guide, to name a few.
A worthy upgrade to this company’s line of rotary tools, the
4000 can be a trusted friend that is ready to tackle all of your
modeling projects.

KBDD has helicopter accessories that not only make a machine
brighter (read that, “easier to see”), but they can also improve or
change the performance of most popular RC helicopters on the
market.
This company started with a line of head dampeners that
offered longer life and the head stability that serious 3-D pilots
were seeking. Now KBDD’s line is expanding.
Its paddles provide performance for a variety of flying styles.
They have two mounting holes. The front flybar hole is threaded
and will be the most preferred, and the rear hole should be used by
only the most aggressive 3-D pilots who demand lots of “pop.”
KBDD tail blades
are a bright addition
to any helicopter,
even if the pilot’s
need is as simple as
making the overall
airframe more
visible. As are the
paddles, the tail
blades are available
in four colors and
feature sizes for 200
motors up to large
gas engines. There’s even a night blade and paddle set.
We found the paddles to be an improvement in helicopterperformance
solidity, without sacrificing maneuverability. The tail
blades are stiff and are a practical alternative to carbon-fiber tail
blades that can break easily.

An RC simulator is a great
way to practice flying helicopters
and airplanes without the fear of
losing your prized model.
RealFlight Basic gives pilots all
they need to be successful with
their simulator stick time. It
features many aircraft and flying
fields found in current versions
of RealFlight G4.5, in addition to
Expansion Packs including 47
aircraft and six PhotoField flying
sites.
RealFlight Basic includes a
six-channel controller that is
based on an actual transmitter. The program is housed on a single
DVD, to streamline the installation process. We installed it on a
laptop, which enables us to get in some flying time when we’re on
the road attending
events.
Anyone who has
used RealFlight will
probably find the
Basic version to be
similar; it uses the
same flight physics.
The transmitter allows
users to employ the
menu to select airports
and aircraft. And it features a reset button, so staying within reach
of the keyboard and mouse is not required.
If you are in the market for an RC flight simulator, RealFlight
Basic is a low-cost option that is worth looking into.

The choices an RC pilot has for powering today’s electric models
can have his or her head spinning. The thought of batteries alone
proposes shopping and comparing dozens of reputable distributors.
What most drop-dead, bargainprice
Li-Poly battery resellers
can’t offer is service, so the best
advice is to go with a supplier
that will stick by you after the
sale.
RC Accessory now imports
a line of batteries that has
staggering performance
offerings. Not only that, but the
huge variety of packs are priced
reasonably and are
accompanied by a fair
warranty.
PowerEdge batteries have a
30C or better resistance rating and can be charged at 3C. That means
that after a pack is used, it can be ready to use again in just 20
minutes.
We’re sampling four of the most popular battery sizes: 1300 mAh
3S, 2100 mAh 3S, 2200 mAh 4S, and 2600 mAh 6S. They all arrived
assembled with Dean’s Ultra Connectors and seemed well
assembled.
So far, we have been pleased with discharge and charging.
Exciting the batteries to get even warm has proven to be a
challenge—but we’ll keep trying. Power output is awesome.

sensor fastens
directly onto the gasengine
heat sink like

activated, it delivers continuous and accurate temperature readings.
The large LCD screen can feature centigrade or fahrenheit
readings, has an on/off button for longer battery life, and has a
callback button to check the highest and lowest temperature. The
TG-3 is simple to install and it comes with a clear molded splash
guard.
We tested our unit on a helicopter that had a hard-to-find
overheating problem. We could read the gauge while the model
was in a hover. The TG-3 helped us narrow down what changes
had the greatest effect; it saved a lot of diagnostic time and costly
engine repairs.
The TG-3 is $22.95.

Sometimes, the
favorite tool in your box
used to be the most
misunderstood. The Angle
Wizard might quickly
become your favorite,
especially if you’re
serious about setting up
any model precisely so it
flies off of the workbench
trim free.
Using this
implement requires no
preparation. Set the
Wizard on any surface,
hit the “zero” button,
and tilt surface as
needed. It can measure
up to 180° and is
accurate up to 1/10°. The
digital display is clear.
We found it helpful
to attach low-tack, double-stick tape to the bottom surface of the
Angle Wizard so that it was less likely to slide on smooth, filmcovered
surfaces. Thanks to the travel pouch, it’s safe to have in
the field box for quick referencing. The cost is $34.95.
