14 MODEL AVIATION
This is the newest release in the Phlatboyz line of modeling
devices. It is an inexpensive vacuum-forming machine kit with a
low-profile design and a forming bead of 10 x 10 inches.
The kit includes CNC-cut wooden cabinet parts, all required
hardware, all required connectors, high-temperature rubber seal,
universal shop-vacuum attachment, and power foot switch.
Also included are
15 sheets of .020-inch
polystyrene foam and
five sheets of .020-inch
PETG plastic. You
supply the heating
source and the vacuum,
and you will be making
your own vacuumformed
parts in no
time.

The dark art of
precision 3-D helicopter
flying needs an angel. The
Black Angel is a 450-class
machine that incorporates
new ideas, and it is
available for a great price:
$269.
At its mechanical
limits, this model offers an extra-wide pitch range of +/- 15. The
additional stress of that pitch range is supported with mechanics
that include an oversized feathering shaft and a hardenedaluminum
washout base connected to a reinforced swashplate.
The Black Angel’s single-stack carbon-fiber frame features
thick aluminum bearing blocks and spacers. Wiring is easy to
organize along multiple strap locations machined into the sides.
Little plastic is used, and the aluminum machining is polished and
fits tight for slop-free operation.
The total parts count is minimal, and this helicopter’s sleek
outlines enhance its quality feel in flight. A belt-driven tail features
a control system with lots of
authority, so solid tail-rotor
control is effortless and
consistent.
This model is available in
the US and fully partssupported
at this time through
an eBay store. That might
seem odd, but it works well.
We met the owner of the
distribution company in
Toledo and learned that he is an RC pilot who is totally in tune
with the product.
The Black Angel is a solid machine with the potential to please
the most demanding 3-D pilot. Its kit price includes a partially
assembled machine with painted canopy and carbon-fiber blades.

Discus-launch glider (DLG) fans will be happy to see this new
design. The 1-meter, 40-inch offering is based on Dr. Mark Drela’s
Apogee.
With a smaller wingspan than on the typical DLG, the Elf will
give a faster roll rate and agile control response. It is also versatile,
because the throwing peg can be mounted on either wingtip.
The wing is one piece and features a carbon D-box LE. The
composite tail comes prehinged, and the nose cone is removable.
This lightweight model weighs approximately 3.5 ounces and
will be available in three colors: transparent blue, transparent red,
and transparent violet.

We were impressed to see 3-D make its way into the Reflex
XTR2 RC flight simulator. The 3-D functionality works with the
most current version of Reflex XTR2, via free download, and will
be coming with new versions of the software.
Pilots put on their 3-D glasses and were immediately immersed
in this extra dimension that provided more depth than we are used
to and made it easier to interact with on-screen environments.
We were also amazed to learn that the TV used at the booth was
not a 3-D model.
Reflex XTR2 is 3-
D, which means
that you can use
any screen or any
computer to get
the effect. You
also have the
option of turning
3-D on and off, in
case it’s too much
for you to begin
with.
If you are
looking for some
in-your-face flying, with the help of the third dimension you will
be impressed with the Reflex XTR2.

This new 2.4 GHz system takes a break from conservative radio
design, but in a cool sci-fi kind of way. We got to handle one at the
show and found that not
only did it have a nice
feel, but it also has great
programming features.
Some of the things
we took note of were the
30-model memory, SD
card slot for additional
model storage and
updates, custom naming
for flight modes, and the
ability to access all
function and system
menus without having
to turn off the
transmitter.
You can take
advantage of everything
the 11X has to offer
along with an R921
receiver for $749.99.

This new sevencylinder,
four-stroke,
overhead-valve radial
engine was impressive,
and we found ourselves
wishing we could hear it
run at the show.
Its basic
specifications include a
displacement of 69.65cc,
a 24mm bore, a 22mm
stroke, and a weight of
just less than 7 pounds.
The mounting holes for
the FR7 are the same as
for the five-cylinder FR5. Suggested propeller sizes range from 22
x 10 to 26 x 8.
While we eagerly await a release date and more details on the
Sirius FR7, we are compiling a short list of models we would love
to bolt it onto.

This single-cylinder, two-stroke power plant incorporates ABC
(aluminum piston, chrome-plated brass sleeve) technology for
long life and easy break-in. A dual-needle-valve carburetor for
precise fuel/airflow metering is standard.
The XLS 52 features an optional cast-aluminum, rear-needlevalve
assembly and high-flow muffler for more power and
reduced
noise.
This
engine was
designed by
expert
engineers and
built by
master
craftsmen
using the
highestquality
materials and
CNC
machinery.
These qualities provide the long life and dependability you can
expect from a power plant of this caliber.

Following the successful launch of the AJ Slick, Andrew Jesky
has teamed with 3D Hobby Shop to release the new 62-inch-span
Osiris.
Designed to be an RC Aerobatics (Pattern) thoroughbred, Andrew
used his knowledge and experience as one of the top Pattern pilots in
competition today to provide a low-cost
option for precision fliers.
Created to be flown using a five- or
six-cell, 4000-5000 mAh battery,
this model’s motor
requirements are in the
1,300- to 1,500-watt
range. Depending
on equipment used,
the aircraft should
weigh 6-7 pounds.
The Osiris will be available in two color
schemes: red (shown) and blue and yellow
with a bit of black thrown in.
Whether you are looking for a
Pattern airplane for competition,
for practice, or as a backup, this
model will fit that description and
won’t cost you a fortune.
