NO OCR TEXT Test Pilots Report Jim Haught asked test-fly control line model issue Model Aviation figured could get too much trouble since airplane beginners model flown control line several years really done no CL flying 12 years Understand Jim mostly free fighter experience RCnot designing control line trainer So laughed little suggested moment desperation trying get Jim bother someone else XB-70 Shortly thereafter brought set plans bellcrank drawn knew trouble After some preliminary design consultations like Jim really think bellcrank should CG yes demand have landing gear Jim proceeded build model working CL Sig Twister time control line stuff fresh mind relayed much information possible Jim less week brought completed XB-70 inspection Overall everything looked pretty good worried over what length cut control lines finally decided 26 feet looked about right lines cut control handle adjusted neutral elevator Dont forget next problem weather Midwest has seen record snowfall winter deadline getting very close decided give try less-than-perfect day wind about 8 mph got circle time set up probably up 10 mphnot great first flight new model cinle also little snow left engine little troublesome cold weather Jim got running ran out control handle checked controls up down neutral good habit get want sure dont pick up handle upside down neutral position did shift signaled release model immediately step backward maintain line tension model trying turn circle bit worried about since landing gear has narrow stance pusher setup did allow much airflow over rudders wind immediately blew model over toward slid safe stop upside down no damage Jim put some right turn nose gear added right thrust engine before next attempt couple days later day much warmer wind blowing about 5 mph decided set up model pointing downwind start would give prior coming fully wind wanted try keep model ground long possible see anything would sort itself out prior getting airborne rechecked everything started engine signaled release model slight tendency XB-70 turn circle tug lines stopped little up elevator flying As expected model fast looks about tight 26-foot line length should have bit longer Thirty thirty-five feet would probably better choice beginners Stay 30 feet wind blows much 5 mph Youll have turn faster airplane will penetrate wind much better time XB-70 took air wind probably up 8 mph fair amount airplane handled well flew upwind tendency wings tip toward center circle nonnal small control line models wind gets too strong may have take step back times XB-70 flew very well neutral elevator produced level flight elevator seems ample excessive Landings should done carefully Especially bit wind model should flown ground fairly qulckly Dont try slow down too much Instead get down few inches off ground rotate nose up touchdown first flight landed about two feet off ground due pulling up too soon Since fairly small airplane will have back up soon engine cuts out maintain line tension Lead airplane little keep speed up Level off near ground pull nose up last instant XB-70 lot fun fly looks great air time beginner can build fly scale model first airplane Above have fun fly safely os author Matthew Usher Grauhic Desion Carla Kunz Steve Kaluf balmy 450 February day Steve Kaluf checks out XB-70 Unmistakable ground air
