Slow Motion

The Slow Motion Tradition is the fourth in the series of Slow Motions. First was the Slow Motion, for .15-.40 engines, in the January 1987 Model Aviation. Second was the Senior Slow Motion (.40-.60 engines) in October 1993 MA. Third was the Slow Motion TD .09 (for .09 15 engines, August 1997 MA). All Slow Motions are of the 21st century Simitar Series. This model was so named because it is a Slow Motion elevated to tricycle gear and stretched fuselage with enhancements to give it a more traditional appearance. Almost all who have seen the new Tradition have taken a great liking to it.

Krackerjac Mk. I and Mk. II

VOICE OFFSTAGE: Here we go again! From opposite schools of design, our coauthors have managed a second (and last, one presumes) unlikely collaboration. West Coaster Evans, who loves straight-up and 140º-plus flybys, is known for his philosophy that horizontal tails are tantamount to buggy-whip technology. East Coaster prehistoric old-timer Bill Winter is a go-slow airplane watcher who thinks that straight-up folks harbor hidden rocketry complexes. Still, they found middle ground and produced the Krackerjac MK I and II.

.09 Slow Motion

Thoughts and ideas that give inspiration to the design of new Simitar aircraft come from many directions. The first Slow Motion (.15-.40, Model Aviation January 1987) began with Bill Winter telling me that he would like to have a slow-flying Simitar. Before long, a Senior Slow Motion was on the board. It was inspired by the fact that so many plans were sold for the first Slow Motion, a larger .40-.60 size was needed. The Senior Slow Motion was published in the October 1993 MA. The .09 Slow Motion development began when I was sent a prototype of Cox's first .09 with a true muffler and a speed-controlled carburetor. Now, what to put it in? Thoughts began to stir. Size? Weight? Which wing? Tail-dragger of tricycle gear? I came to the conclusion that the ideal wing was the 48 1/2-inch span version used on the original Simitar (RCM, December 1976).

Senior Slow Motion

It was inevitable that the success and popularity of the Slow Motion (January 1987 Model Aviation) would lead to the development of the larger Slow Motion Senior. Some time ago, Bill Winter, who has endless thoughts about new models (mostly lightweight tail-draggers) made the mistake of telling me that he would like to fly a Simitar. I took the challenge without realizing that his requirements for a lightweight, ultra-slow-flying tail-dragger variant would be almost impossible to produce. After several letters, many phone calls, and almost total agreement on every issue, the first Slow Motions took shape: one for Bill, and one for me.
