Address is in Byron's column this month. 1989 U.S. F3B TEAM: The plane on the '89 team logo looks suspiciously like Rich Spicer's Synergy III. I wonder who designed it (the logo), eh Rich? Seth Dawson has decided to also fly a Synergy III at the World Championships in France this August. He flew a modified Comet to win the team trials last September. Larry Jolly said he is working on a new plane, but we haven't seen it yet.

NATS NEWS. Tom Culmsee, Event Director for Soaring at this year's AMA Nats, called to let everyone know what the schedule would be. It's quite a bit different from past years, so please read this carefully! Soaring at the Nats will run from Monday, July 18 through Saturday, July 23. Flying will be on a nice big field near Richland, WA (in the southeast corner of the state). This is the rundown of daily events: Monday: Cross-Country race. AMA Sanctioned; flown to provisional F3H rules. Fliers not into X-C can go up to the fabulous Eagle Butte for some Slope fun-flying.
F3B Soaring World Champs
HOSTED by the French for 1989, the F3B World Championships took place August 14th through 19th on the grounds of the Melun Villaroche Airfield, about 30 kilometers southeast of Paris. NEAT constant-tension winch: Jack Perecman (Golden Valley, MN) sent the excellent photos of his very neat winch. Jack's letter tells all about it: "Enclosed you will find some photos showing a constant-tension winch I designed and built. This winch is presently in its second season and, so far, has proven to be quite reliable. I'm a member of the Minnesota RC Soaring Society, and we have used the winch for both club fun-flys and contests. The motor is a starter motor from a Johnson outboard. It has high torque, plus the advantages of both a long shaft with a thread on the end and splines near the motor face to make mounting the drum quite easy.
Scale Soaring Fun Fly
THE SECOND annual running of this event, also known as the International Slope Scale Fun Fly, was held just outside Kennewick, WA over the Memorial Day weekend. The location is known as the Tri-Cities because the cities of Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco adjoin along the banks of the beautiful Columbia River in southeastern Washington State. The semidesert climate is quite unlike that of western Washington. Of great importance to us Glider fliers, what's lacking in moisture (usually!) is compensated for by nice, big hills.
