Radio Control: Soaring
U.S. F3B team fundraising is now in full swing. Soaring enthusiasts no doubt know that the United States has sent a team to the F3B World Championships, held every other year since 1977. The 1991 World Champs will be in August in the Netherlands, with nearly 30 countries competing. Making up our U.S. team are the top three finishers at the team selection finals held in Denver last Labor Day-Larry Jolly, Daryl Perkins and Joe Wurts, all from the Los Angeles area. These guys are definitely world-class fliers. I believe they have an excellent shot at winning the World Champs team trophy, something we have never done. It'll be a proud day for all American Sailplaners if they can pull it off!

THE 1991 F3B World Championships will be held in the Netherlands beginning August 24th. This is the Olympic Games of RC Soaring. Nearly 30 countries will compete for Individual and Team Championship titles. Our U.S. F3B team pilots are Larry Jolly, Daryl Perkins and Joe Wurts. Team Manager Randy Spencer sent important news that a fundraising raffle is on, with a round trip air ticket to Holland to attend the World Champs as first prize! Other prizes include an Airtronics Vision radio system, Airtronics Legend Sailplane kit, Composite Structures Technology vacuum-bagging system, custom wing bags from American Sailplane Designs, and many more items from major manufacturers.

A BIG PART of what makes our RC Soaring hobby so interesting is the freedom to continuously innovate and improve the aircraft. By this I mean that most fliers develop ideas about what makes a better glider. There is nothing stopping any of us from designing and building the world's best, contest winningest sailplane . . . except that most of us are too busy to get around to it! That's why I admire the folks who design, prove out, and actually put their gliders on the market. This month we'll feature two small manufacturers, one that has been around for a couple of years (RnR Products), and a brand new one (Fox Models). But first a commercial on behalf of the Home Team.

THE THERMAL EAGLE from Flite Lite Composites is the latest design by Mark Allen of Falcon fame. The Thermal Eagle bears a strong family resemblance to the Falcon, but has a slimmer fuselage and stretched wing. Actually, the Thermal Eagle is derived from Mark's new F3B design called the Eagle. Mark is working with Joe Wurts and Daryl Perkins on the development of the F3B Eagle. These US F3B Team members want to fly an American-made ship in the up-coming F3B World Champs.

Byron Blakeslee's column continues this month with the reprint of "Landing With Flaps" by Bob McGowan: Landing With Flaps by Bob McGowan. Going by reader response, "Tips from the Experts" is the most popular stuff in the column. This month we are indeed fortunate in having a super article from the Master-two years in a row! As Don McColgan described above, Bob won the 1991 Masters over a very impressive roster of expert pilots. Typical of contests where most guys have no trouble getting their flight times, the Masters was won with consistently high precision landings.
