Scale Masters
The 15th Annual Scale Masters Championships was held at the Marine Air Corps Station in Tustin, California September 8-11, 1994. The Tustin Model Club hosted the competition. Scale Masters Chairman Harris Lee and his wife Edie welcomed everyone to the event. Pacer Technologies (ZAP), the major sponsor for the event, was represented by Herschel Worthy, Vice President of Sales. Other sponsors were Hobby Shack, Futaba, Dick Hanson Video, Proctor Models, Robart, and JR. If we have missed mentioning anyone, please accept our apologies.
Radio Control: Scale
AS WE ARRIVED in the Tri-Cities area in mid-July, we were a bit skeptical about the weather for the Scale Nats. An unseasonal storm passed through, carrying with it heavy rain, wind, lightning, thunder, and hail. But the weather gods were kind once the event got underway. Static judging for RC and CL Scale was held at the Shilo Inn in Richland on Monday, July 10. Three judges were used per category. Darlene Frederick and Hank Cavasso of California and Al Culver of Idaho judged the Designer Scale, FAI F4C/F4B and Control Line Precision Scale categories. Wayne Frederick of California, Charlie Bauer of Illinois, and Bill Kleinhans of Illinois judged the Expert Scale category. Vernon Altamirano of California, Bruce Tharpe of Oregon, and Floyd Bryant of Idaho judged Sportsman Scale RC and CL.
Scale World Championships
PERIGUEUX IS LOCATED in beautiful wine country in the south of France. Our Radio Control and Control Line teams met in Paris for a final flight to Bordeaux, where we would be bussed to Perigueux. Unfortunately, for many we left behind, it was a day of grave concern: TWA Flight 800 from New York crashed shortly after takeoff the day we left for the World Championships. We were oblivious to the whole tragedy until we arrived in Perigueux the following day. Fortunately none of our team was on that flight.
