RC SLOPE SOARING - 2015/02
My flying buddy, Joe Chovan, from Syracuse, New York, has contributed a guest column this month on the Soar Utah 2014 event—one of the most venerable destinations on the national Slope Soaring event circuit. Here’s Joe’s report:

Dave Garwood: At what age did you begin flying RC?
Michael Richter: I started building a Sig Riser before I actually learned how to fly. That was 1991, and I was 12. I thought the flying part would fall into place and I would just “figure it out.”

The Dream-Flight Libelle is the latest and greatest light-air Slope sailplane. Small hills are more plentiful than large ones, and flying the right sailplane can turn a 15-foot gentle hill into a satisfying Slope Soaring site. Some airframes can pull off this trick better than others.

When I asked several Slope Soaring aficionados two questions about sailplanes, I received a variety of answers. I hope their responses can be helpful to modelers of all skill levels, and maybe even generate a chuckle or two. Maybe you’ll see yourself in the remarks of these fliers.

Slope gliders have long been the fastest airplanes in model flight. “Fastest Model Ever Flown” in the August 1978 issue of MA is an account of someone flying a Slope glider to 242.9 mph. That was on the front side of the hill.
