SOMETHING NEW? I suppose that over the years just about every conceivable aspect of RC Scale flying has been covered in the various RC magazines. Subjects have ranged from the basics of building/covering/flying to the absurdities of growing your own balsa, and fiberglass weaving techniques. It's all there somewhere. There is, however, a growing acceptance of ducted fans in sport and competition RC Scale, an aspect which opens up a whole new group of concerns and techniques. I hope that my article this month will clarify some of the problems heard the most.

SURFACE detailing a Scale model: There are any number of ways to simulate panel lines on a model. All of them require a fair amount of effort to do properly. The first and most important requirement is to have an accurate set of three-views. To determine their accuracy, divide a known dimension (wing-span) of the three-view into the wingspan of the model. This will provide a number which will be used to multiply dimensions taken from the three-view to determine dimension of the model (Whew!). Now, at random, pick some easily measured features of the three-view: aileron length, canopy length, or elevator span, for example. Multiply these using the conversion factor found earlier, and see how closely the three-view matches the model.
