Things You Should Know About Noise
"SOUND," according to Webster, is ". . . the sensation produced in the ears when certain vibrations are caused in the surrounding air." "Noise," on the other hand, is called "sound, of a loud, harsh, or confused kind." Human perception of sound seems to vary with the individual; what may be noise to one person may not be experienced negatively by another. Prolonged exposure to high-decibel sound levels is well documented as potentially leading to permanent hearing damage. The sound produced by our model aircraft engines can be damaging to the modeler's hearing and to that of others who may be closely involved in operating the engines. It can also be annoying to individuals a considerable distance away.

IT ALL began in Celina, Ohio where many brave souls met in combat to try for the 1979 USA R/C Aerobatic Team. When the smoke cleared, Dave Brown, Mark Radcliff and Dean Koger had clearly earned that honor. Fortunately for yours truly, the team selected me to act as their team manager. The site of the World Championships is close to 5800 feet above mean sea level, so it was determined wise to hold a team practice session to sort out this possible problem. Off we went on Labor Day weekend to Denver, Colorado for a bit of a team practice and adjustments for the high-altitude conditions. Thanks to Bob Graber, Travis McGinnis and other modelers in the Denver area, we spent a very enjoyable and profitable weekend and learned some interesting things.
Tournament of Champions
A FURTHER PAGE of accomplishment in this great hobby/sport was the 1982 Tournament of Champions. Starting in 1974, when Bill Bennett (chairman of the board of the Circus Circus Hotel/Casino) and Walt Schroder conceived the event; it has continued to add spectacle and development to model aviation. From the beginning, the driving desire was to create an event that would eventually emulate, in model form, the same spectacle of aerobatics as the manned full-scale craft flown by our brothers. It has taken much foresight and development over the years, but this year one could truly say that this theme has come of age.
