Scale Tips for the Common Modeler
EVERY modeler wants to build a better-looking airplane. This article focuses on a few simple, inexpensive ideas for adding eye appeal and realism to Scale and nonscale models alike. Most of us use wheel collars to hold on our airplane's wheels and nylon wing bolts or rubberbands to attach the wings. These devices are fast, easy, familiar-and often downright ugly. Let's see how we can make that P-51D Mustang look more scalelike, or make that Telemaster appear more realistic. Of course, there'll be questions at the field. "Jus' how did you do that?" your flying buddies will want to know.

AS THIS is being written, it's the time of year when we are preparing for the next year-that is, if you live where snow is flying instead of airplanes. Most of our 37 AMA sanctioned show teams are busy building and planning for the 1992 season. Ideas that were formed last summer and fall are taking shape in workshops across the U.S.A. Show team members are building everything from beautiful Scale jobs to flying cars and lawn mowers. Some will be making banner tows to announce shows or acts or to provide messages. How about making a banner to use at your club event? It's not all that difficult. Jim Lasik of Holland, Michigan (Spirit of America AST) has been the flagman for the Spirit and is also known as the Banner Man. Jim provides some tips on the art of banner making and towing:
Only 4-Cycle-Powered Models Are Invited To Fly At The Hawks 4-Cycle Rally
FOR THOSE who love model planes that sound like full-scale airplanes, are fuel efficient, and fly scalelike, the HAWKS (Hamilton Area Wireless Kontrol Society) Four-Cycle Rally held in Hamilton, Ohio, is the place you ought to be. Late September is the time when over 100 four-cycle fans make an annual pilgrimage to southwestern Ohio to have fun, share experiences, and take home prizes of over $6,000 worth of engines, radios, kits, and more.
Let The Show Begin: What Are the AMA Show Teams Up To?
From down south Alabama way, the Bama Flyers, AST #122, took part in the Dog Daze Parade. Guess Dog Daze is what they call August around Birmingham 'cause it's so hot, don't ya see. Anyway, if your club wants to get some positive exposure around your hometown, consider a parade. Latch onto some ideas from the Bama Flyers' float. In the accompanying photo is the bearded wonder, team manager Jim Weems, with his 1/3-scale Extra 230. Big, huh? The Bama Flyers Space Shuttle really flies at the air shows.
Hawks: Four-Cycle Rally
To those of you who love models that sound like real airplanes, who prefer expensive fuel to be burned mostly in the engine, and who like to see models fly like real aircraft-not zip around like a houseflies in a jar-welcome again to the 11th Annual HAWKS Four-Cycle Rally. The Hamilton Area Wireless Kontrol Society holds the three-day event at Joyce Park in hilly Hamilton, Ohio, during the third weekend in September. The 1993 rally had more than 110 pilots and more than 200 four-stroke airplanes-that's a record. Thanks goes to Tower Hobbies, O.S. Engines, Sig Manufacturing, and other sponsors; there were thousands of dollars in prizes.
