COLUMBIA, Tennessee has a great new model airport. It's the new home of the Columbia Radio Control Flying Modelers Club (CRCFMC). If you looked at the pictures on this page, you've already seen the place. The airpark has a 500-ft. paved runway, five taxi strips, paved pit area, covered shelter, screened bleachers for spectators, rest room, storage building, excellent access road, and lots of parking. What more could a dedicated model aviator ask for? How did all of this come about? It's a good story-a story of dedication, hard work, an attitude of civic responsibility by a major company, and amazing cooperation among several local companies and an AMA chartered club.
AMA Lends a Helping Hand
The AMA Delta Dart was the centerpiece at a dinner to help build support for the new Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum annex planned for Dulles International Airport. A fine collection of historic aircraft, some awaiting restoration, will be housed in the proposed NASM branch. AMA SPONSORED a table at a formal dinner hosted by the Washington Airports Task Force on March 30, 1990. Held at the Sheraton Premier Hotel in suburban Washington, DC, this gala affair was intended to highlight the proposed expansion of the Smithsonian Institution National Air & Space Museum (NASM) with a new exhibition building planned for Dulles International Airport. The AMA table was one of 95 at this huge banquet. Executive Director Vince Mankowski acted as the official host for AMA and was accompanied by myself as director of marketing.
EAA Announces `Young Eagles' Program
"GET 1,000,000 young people in the cockpits of light airplanes in the next 11 years." With those words, Tom Poberezny, president of the Experimental Aircraft Association, set the tone for a press conference held in Washington, D.C., on May 13, 1992. Using a conference room within sight of the White House in the nation's capital, this ambitious program was expounded to an audience of Congressmen, public officials from various agencies, and the media.
