Toledo '93
There are always new products, goodies, and kits introduced at the Toledo show, and the 1993 show had lots of new Scale stuff, too. The newest software program from Model CAD is Wingmaster. President and program designer Bob Webster indicated that there is a great deal of interest in this new Windows program. This was the greatest aid for the Scale builder seen at Toledo '93. Wingmaster, known as the model wing designer, designs wings and more. You can design the wing shape in any size you want, customize the airfoils, and print the wing layout, wing ribs, and everything you need to build. You can also select from 250 airfoil designs, including the series of Clark, Curtis, USA, Gottingen, RAF, and over 100 Eppler air foils.
Scale Masters
"This really feels good," responded Dennis Crooks after winning Scale Masters '93, held October 21-24. The 40-year-old Big Rock, Illinois native won the event with his twin ducted-fan Learjet 35A, which had a fiberglass fuselage with a full interior, complete lighting system, and brakes. The facilities at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, California were great: there was a huge runway and protected pit area designed for model airplane events. The site was prepared by the host club, the Scale Squadron of Southern California, and the Scale Masters Championship Board. The club even went so far as to plant trees along the boundary line in order to dampen the noise.
Gator Shoot-Out: First Annual Invitational Air Show of Champions
Billed as an "Invitational Airshow of Champions," the first Gator R/C Shoot-Out was the idea of Wally Zober, and was successfully held at the now-famous R/C World Flying Site in Orlando, Florida. Most well-known Scalemasters pilots were invited, such as Mr. Top Gun, Corvin Miller; former Top Gun winner, Mel Whitley; Bill McCallie, Frank Tiano, Colonel Art Johnson, and many more. Not all invited fliers could attend. Some of the fliers who were able to attend did not have their models ready, or their models had been damaged in arguments with terra firma before the meet.
Fly-In Fever: A Giant-Scale Epidemic
More than 300 fliers attended the 15th annual Rally of the Giants June 22-25, 1995 at Danville, Virginia. The International Miniature Aircraft Association (IMAA) event was hosted by the Danville AeroModelers and AMA club #1221 at the Danville Regional Airport. This event was very successful-the rain that fell every day hardly deterred the flying. The organization and support provided by the AeroModelers was also a big factor in the event's success; John Estlow was the event director and Bob Dean is the IMAA chapter president. Modelers from all over the US flew from dawn 'til dusk on the inactive runway at Danville. More than 4,000 IMAA members live within a one-day drive of Danville, so it was easy to gather a large crowd of fliers, spectators, and manufacturers.
