Control Line: Combat
FOR THOSE WHO DIDN'T make it out to Muncie for the Nats this year, you missed almost perfect Combat flying weather. We had no rain, moderate temperatures toward the end of the week, and just enough wind to keep us cool. There were some surprises, and many spectacular matches. For the third consecutive year, Fox sponsored an unofficial Super Slow event that was held on the Sunday before the official events began. First prize was a Fox .35 Stunt. With 17 entries, this was the biggest Combat event at the Nats. Since any airplane was allowed, and this was a low-key event, every manner of airplane to which one could attach a .35 Stunt was used-foamies for Fast and Slow, old Flite Streaks, and Czech-built F2D models.

NATIONALS (Nats) Control Line (CL) Combat lucked out as far as weather was concerned. The week before and the week after featured 95± degree heat and high humidity. The Combat events were flown under pleasant conditions-moderate wind, and 70- to 80-degree temperatures. Event Director Larry Skelley raised $4,000 in prize money for Combat-$1,000 for each event. The cash drew fliers from across the US, making this the largest Combat Nats since Lubbock TX in 1995. The trend toward decreasing attendance has been reversed-at least temporarily.
