SEPTEMBER IN POLAND marks the beginning of the so-called Golden Polish Autumn, a season renowned for its natural beauty and excellent weather. The autumn of 1939, however, presented a vastly different picture. National rivalries in Europe had intensified to the point that impending disaster seemed almost palpable, and a cloud of doom hung over Poland, mocking those clear, idyllic skies. The Poles, Long anticipating a German invasion, had begun advance military preparations in the last days of August.

THE PATENT OFFICE (more formally known as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, but from now on called PTO) is a remarkable repository of materials of potential interest to modelers. Yet for some reason it remains, for the most part, a mysterious place rarely explored or known primarily because of its dealings with inventors and inventions. What seems to be totally underestimated by the public at large (and by modelers in particular) is the fact that its files contain a vast collection of material potentially useful to designers of models, tinkerers, would-be inventors, and inventors.
