I was explaining the term aspect ratio to my then-nine-year-old son Aza, taking part in the ages-old tradition of passing knowledge from one generation to the next. I gave him a simple example: "For a rectangular wing, the aspect ratio is the span divided by the chord. A wing of one foot span and one foot chord would have an aspect ratio of ... He interrupted, "One!" "Right," I said, "and if it had a span of four feet ... "The aspect ratio would be four!" said Aza. I showed him that we notate these aspect ratios as 1:1 and 4:1.
