RADIO CONTROL SCALE - 2001/02
Who hAS the red pen? Model Aviation
now has an Aeromodeling Editor, and I
think you’ll see subtle changes and
improvements in the magazine in the
years to come. Robin “Bob” Hunt is the
new man, and he brings a wealth of
valuable aeromodeling experience to
MA’s pages.
Bob gave modelers reliable information
as the editor of Flying Models for more than
17 years. He was inducted into the AMA
Model Aviation Hall of Fame in August.
Bob is a World Champion (1978) in
Control Line Precision Aerobatics—”Stunt”
to the layperson—and he has several
brilliant model designs to his credit.
Years ago, I built one of Bob’s
SuperTigre .46-powered World Champion
Genesis Stunt models. Because of his
unique ability to impart hands-on
knowledge by way of the written word, the
model turned out a few clicks better than it
might have otherwise.
As a result, my Hunt Genesis has been
on display in the AMA museum since 1987.
Bob has aeromodeling experience across
the board; he is an experienced Radio
Control, Control Line, and Free Flight flier,
a dedicated modeler, and a consummate
craftsman in each aeromodeling category.
I think we’re about to enter a new era
of informative publishing in Model
Aviation’s feature articles.
Please join me in welcoming Bob
Hunt to Model Aviation. I grew up
reading this guy’s things, and I learned a
lot about modeling from him—so will
you. He’s a friend, and is definitely one
of the good guys.

Radio Control: Scale
TOMORROW MORNING I'll be packing for Indianapolis, Indiana, for a visit with the good people of ISC International. ISC International is a familiar name to most of us, primarily as the North American distributor of Zenoah Engines, GMS (Gemtec Machinery Systems) Model Engines of China, and that great ISC ARC/ARF 1/4-scale J-3 Cub. Following my day at ISC, I'll drive to Muncie for the RC Scale portion of the National Aeromodeling Championships and my first look at AMA's new Indiana home. Everything on the grapevine says the new location is a marked improvement over the Reston, Virginia facility, and I honestly can't wait to see it. I'm taking along a lot of film, so you can share the experience.

MY TRIP to Indiana last summer was a lot of fun. In Indianapolis, I spent a Friday afternoon with Bev, Jimmy, and Jim Goad of ISC International-distributors of Tartan, Zenoah, GMS 2000, Asp, and Tiger Shark engines. The rest of the weekend was spent at the RC Scale portion of the National Aeromodeling Championships in Muncie. My visit with the Goads was fun and informative. They run a very healthy RC distributorship; it's pumped full of quality products and unparalleled customer service. Instead of just selling RC products, these folks also design, engineer, and fly many of the products they sell. You can find Jimmy Goad on the flightline at Madera and Houston; Jim Sr. spends most of his time in the company's research-and-development rooms, inspecting, refining, and doing whatever else is needed to assure modelers will receive the perfection they've come to expect from the engines ISC handles.

RC SCALE was held Friday, July 12 through Sunday, July 14. Friday was set aside for the very difficult task of static-judging some of the finest RC Scale models in the land, while Saturday and Sunday played host to four rounds of precise Scale flying from these very same airplanes. Four classes were offered: Sportsman Sport Scale, Expert Sport Scale, Designer Scale, and FAI. Sport Scale is where the majority of the entrants are found, separated by the competitive experience levels of Sportsman and Expert. Designer Scale is open to contestants who have designed-that's designed, not built from plans-their own aircraft. FAI is judged by international rules.
