Member Benefits: From time to time, the Academy has offered special additional benefits to our members (outlined on page 2 of the Membership Manual located inside your Membership Services and Product Guide). One such benefit was the Accidental Death & Dismemberment program. Following is a letter from the administrator of this program. "The AMA Accidental Death & Dismemberment program marketed by Albert H. Wolhers & Company has dwindled to the point where it no longer supports the free $10,000 to, from, and at chapter event coverage. You may recall we received a number of beneficiary forms for the to, from, and at coverage, which was promoted as an enticement to get members to buy the optional coverage.

This month I have chosen to summarize an article that was published in the March 1948 Air Trails: "Operation Headache" by Gordon S. Light. "The $64 answer to the `What Do I Get for My Buck?' question by one of America's most famous model aeronauts. A revealing behind the scenes picture of what goes on at the Academy of Model Aeronautics Headquarters. "`Operation Headache' began in 1935. The movement for a truly national model organization took definite shape that year with a series of meetings during the St. Louis Nationals. Hobby leaders from all parts of the country threw in their ideas. The organization set up was agreed upon. `Of, By, and for the Model Builder' was the rallying cry. Officers were elected. The Academy of Model Aeronautics was created.

Good News! Once again, the Radio Control Hobby Trade Association Board has voted to continue funding for the Media Awards Program, which has been a successful promotional tool for the RC industry since 1997. The program presents retailers and clubs with cash awards for verified, positive media coverage of their RC events. The Media Awards Program was designed to introduce RC products to the general public and to convey the message that RC is a fun and exciting activity.

Protecting the Assets of AMA Chartered Clubs and Special Interest Groups: One of the advantages afforded a club or chapter associated with the Academy of Model Aeronautics is insurance protection. The major portion of this protection is directed toward liability concerns primarily arising from incidents associated with flying activities. There are, however, other areas of concern that each of these groups, along with Special Interest Groups (SIGs), should address, whether they are incorporated, have officers, or written bylaws.

Well, it is that time of the month again, the due date for my column in Model Aviation. It has been almost three years since I started writing this column, and I now have firsthand knowledge of how newsletter editors feel! I just returned from the 46th annual Toledo Weak Signals RC Expo, April 9-11, at which the Academy received two generous donations from the Radio Control Hobby Trade Association (RCHTA): $37,500 was the second payment of a $75,000 grant that will be used for AMA's education program, and $10,000 was donated in support of the third annual Model Hobby Grand Event.
