PRIMA KIT: As models-especially the ones intended for the international FAI events-have become more complicated, there has been a growing need for kits that would introduce the less-experienced builder to the newer, high-tech construction materials and techniques. Of course, that can easily be done in the FAI events by furnishing complete, ready-to-fly models. But the cost-often upward of $1,000-can be an impediment. And many modelers want to experience the pleasures of building, as well as flying. Developing a kit that offers ease of construction, high-tech components, and reasonable flying ability is not easy. Doing it at a low price is very, very difficult.

THE PERRIS SPECIAL: Sal Taibi recently sent along some photographs of the group that flies every Wednesday at the Perris, California field and the Perris Special that Sal designed. Here is his description of how the design evolved: "The field near Perris is a great place to fly-unlimited chasing, great weather, etc. In ten years of flying on this field, we have only had eight Wednesdays we couldn't fly. At lunch one day, Robert Watzke asked me to design a model we could call our own Perris Field design. "You must understand this model was designed for the Perris Field fliers' likes and dislikes. One fellow hated windshields, so we have a solid block of balsa instead.

THE FREE FLIGHT Nats just keeps getting better and better. This year the weather was perfect, the field was in great shape, and the competition was tough. The Nats is once again a major contest, drawing contestants from across the country to compete in almost every Free Flight event imaginable. Here are some impressions from a week of flying: The Site: AMA has done an outstanding job of maintaining and improving the national flying site. McLaughlan Road that runs down the west side of the field is now paved, reducing dust and making for much easier riding on a bike. The field was closely-mowed, again making for easier retrieval.
