1992 KRC Electric Fly
SUCCESS: That one word summarizes the 13th KRC Electric Fly. The Keystone RC club's 1992 meet was held on September 19 and 20 at the Buc-Le Aerosportsmen Flying field in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. Practice flying was allowed on the afternoon of Friday, September 18. After a few light showers on Friday and Saturday morning, the weather cleared up, and there were blue skies and puffy little thermal clouds for the rest of the meet. Sunday was especially good, with very light wind and perfect flying weather.
Converting RC Sailplane to Electroflight
THERE HAS BEEN a "revolution" recently in electric power units for 05-size planes, the Astro 05 XL and the Leisure Electronics 05. Electric Sailplanes have always been fun and practical, but these power units put a whole new light on things. They use six-cell sub-C packs, put out about 15% more power than the regular 05, and they have more duration-about 50% more in sport planes and nearly twice more in Sailplanes. I flew my electric-powered Drifter a few weekends ago on a no-thermal day, and was up 15 minutes with no problems at all (using power alone) with the Leisure unit.
Indoor RC Electrics
SOMETIMES the winter months drag on for those of us who get real winters (those who brag about sunny weather in California or Florida don't count!). What could be more natural, then, to try RC indoors? It has been done before, a long time ago, when Ken Willard flew his Gym Dandy indoors with an .010 engine. More recently some Indoor RC has been done with CO-2 engine power. How about electric? This is really a natural-clean, quiet, and convenient. The Astro 020 and the Astro 035 are just the right size, and with the belt drive supplied by Astro Flight, they can swing quite a large prop.
RC Electric
IT IS EARLY in the morning at the lake, and the water is still. The sun is just coming up. A few sleepy ducks are on the water, and some joggers are out to get exercise before going to work. There are a couple of fishermen on a dock nearby waiting for the early morning bite. There is no wind, the air is fresh-a perfect time to be flying. You set the plane on the water. A whisper sound from the prop starts as the plane idles out from the shore, then a low hum is heard as the plane accelerates up on the step.
