The Coronel C-1 Transverse Wing: Experimental Aircraft
The Coronel C-1 Transverse Wing Aircraft is a radio-controlled aircraft designed to initially flight test a new concept in variable high-speed/high-lift airfoils. The concept is designed to create a new class of high-performance aircraft with short takeoff and landing capabilities. Types of aircraft capable of being produced within this class can range from supersonic transports and fighters to subsonic aircraft capable of landing in extremely limited locations. Today, most production aircraft are "compromise" designs where the lift-sustaining airfoils (main set of wings) are designed to operate at the maximum and minimum speeds of the aircraft, but do not operate at maximum efficiency at either extreme. The Coronel Transverse Wing concept proposes that an aircraft can operate at maximum efficient speeds with two sets of wings (a biplane) with thin, short, symmetrical airfoils to produce minimum drag at the higher speeds. This arrangement need not produce more drag than "compromise" designs, but may indeed produce less since the original airfoils will be designed for high speeds, not low speeds.
