Grand Event/Homecoming '99
"It's educational, plus it's just plain fun." The International Aeromodeling Center at AMA Headquarters, Muncie IN, was the site of the third annual Model/Hobby Grand Event and Homecoming, held June 12-13. Sponsored by AMA and RCHTA (Radio Control Hobby Trade Association), the Grand Event featured opportunities for families to be exposed to modeling. There were make-and-take projects and full-scale airplane rides for the kids, and Homecoming flying for members. There was no fee for admission or for activities.
The 1999 National Aeromodeling Championships
THE 73RD National Aeromodeling Championships ("the "Nats") is history. The Nats is the contest that many builders and pilots aspire to win, and work toward during the other 11 months of the year. Much time, money, and effort is put into preparation for this event. "We had an extremely good Nats," said AMA president Dave Brown. The Indoor Free Flight Nationals was held June 2-6 at the Johnson City TN Mini-Dome, on the campus of East Tennessee State University. Outdoor events were held July 9-August 5 at the International Aeromodeling Center in Muncie IN-the fourth Nationals held at the Muncie site. That's approximately a month of continuous competition in Free Flight, Control Line, and Radio Control categories, totaling 104 official (and several unofficial) events. Approximately 100 competitors flew in the Indoor events, approximately 1,000 participated in the Outdoor events, and there were approximately 130 registered volunteers. Overall participation was higher this year than last-more than 1,300 were in attendance.
