International Fly-In
Last year I had the pleasure of attending the 18th Annual Quarter Scale Aircraft Association (QSAA) International Fly-In, held at the El Dorado dry lake bed in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 20-22, 1994. Although there are awards, the QSAA fly-in is not exactly a contest-it's really more of a fun-fly. There are no static judges, there's no documentation to go over, and there are no flying judges. War Birds over Delaware
That's what the Delaware Gypsy Giants did; they held their Gypsy Giant Fly-In and District IV Mini-Festival at Lums Pond State Park in Newark, Delaware. The Gypsy Giants are the International Miniature Aircraft Association (IMAA) branch of the Delaware Radio Control Club. To say that their flying site is magnificent would be an understatement. It has a close-cut grass runway that is approximately 750 feet long by 200 feet wide, with clear approaches from all directions. The event had plenty of parking, food concessions, public rest rooms, a dump station for RVs, and hot water showers for those who were camping ????.
Jets Over DeLand '96
JETS, JETS, JETS! Jets to the right of me, jets to the left of me. Jets in front of me, jets behind me, jets above me. That's the best way that I can describe the Seventh Annual International Jets over DeLand Fly-In. The fly-in, sponsored by the DeLand Golden Hawks, was held on January 25-28 at Sidney Taylor Field in DeLand, Florida. This year's event was a success, with 150 registered pilots and 250 jet models. The club has an arrangement with the city of DeLand which enables them to use an inactive runway at the DeLand city airport. This flying site features a 1,500 × 350-foot tarmac runway. Adjacent to it is a 300-foot-wide close-cut grass strip that is the same length as the runway. This grass strip is used a lot for emergency landings-when landing gear won't extend, for example.
Jets Over DeLand
Have you ever run a contest or major fly-in without any glitches, or pilots and workers copping attitudes, or pilots complaining that they are not getting enough flying time? If you've had such good fortune, you must have participated in this 8th annual jet event, held January 23-26, 1997 at the Sydney Taylor Field, DeLand, Florida. Contest Director Al Tuttle and Golden Hawks crew did a herculean job organizing and running this fly-in. The event started on Thursday with 18 registered pilots; things changed for the better on Friday, with 58; on Saturday, the total went up to 68, with 105 airplanes. Contestants came from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, England, and Scotland.
