TWO ITEMS of major interest to Stunt fliers lead off this month. First, the 1981 Nationals which will be held near San Antonio, TX needs volunteers to work our event. Event Director Bill Howe, 7769 Mary Lou Way, Sacramento, CA 95832, (916) 421-8866, is eagerly seeking judges, recorders, scorers, pit bosses, pull testers, site preparation persons, etc. to work at the Nationals. And, at this writing, he also needs an Assistant Event Director. All those people who have asked the writer what they can do for PAMPA can do something by volunteering to work at the Nationals! Call or write Bill. Second, John Poynter is still making foam wings. He moved up to a more demanding job (that is, a real job), but he insists that he will still be producing his fine wing, although a little slower than in the past. EVERY YEAR at the National Model Airplane Championships, there is the same grumbling-which usually is divided into about six categories: (1) "The judging is poor." (2) "I didn't qualify because my circle was tough, and two other circles had only three good fliers; it was the fault of the drawing procedure for circle assignments." (3) "The CL fliers get the worst pick on sites-look at Wilmington, for instance." (4) "The same fliers always win." (5) "We ought to have categories at the Nationals, like PAMPA categories." (6) "We ought to do something about all of this."

HERE'S SOME information on the Precision Aerobatics Model Pilots Association, as we celebrate its eighth anniversary this month, for those not yet familiar with the organization. This is the special interest group dedicated to Precision Aerobatics in all forms, which includes Old-Time Stunt, Half-A Stunt, profiles, and kits. Organized at the Nationals in windy Oshkosh in 1973, the association has staffed the Nationals and FAI team tryouts since 1974. Various funds have been made available to FAI team members from the PAMPA treasury for their World Championships expenses. PAMPA also started sponsoring a Concours d'Elegance award at the Nationals in 1977 for the Most Beautiful Stunt Plane, as judged by the pilots themselves. PAMPA added a dollar to all of the U.S.A. members' dues-which goes directly to a PAMPA/FAI Stunt Team Fund.
'81 AMA Texas Nats: CL Aerobatics
TEN YEARS is a long time for an impatient, talented flier to wait to win the Nationals. When you have already won the Nationals four previous times and the world title twice, it becomes even more difficult to settle for seconds and thirds-which is what Bill Werwage has had to do since last winning Precision Aerobatics in 1971. However, he put his considerable knowledge and skills all together at the right time to beat an outstanding field at the Texas Nationals. On the Walker Cup finals day, each of the five finalists led the scoring at one time or another; however, the final standings were Werwage (Lakewood, OH), Ted Fancher (Foster City, CA), Les McDonald (Miami, FL), Wynn Paul (Lexington, KY), and Kirk Mullinix (Bellflower, CA).

KEEP in mind that Stunt now has three offshoots from the traditional "Big Stunt" event; they are: (1) Profile Stunt, (2) Half-A Stunt, (3) Old Time Stunt. Especially for beginners and for those who are primarily interested in other events such as Combat, Racing, or even RC, Profile offers the opportunity to get a taste of the challenge of the Stunt event without having to go through the pains of completing a full-fuselage model. Some contest reports have mentioned that "other-event specialists" are flying Profiles in the Beginner and Intermediate divisions of Stunt, and even having some fun while trying to complete the pattern.
