District I

Andy Argenio, District I Vice President; [email protected] Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont

The 2007 outdoor flying season has come to an end and many members are focusing on building something new for next year or flying indoor aircraft at available facilities. If your club has an indoor site and would welcome other AMA members, send an e-mail with the location, dates, and times for flying.

One of the nice things about being the vice president of District I is having contact with the many experienced builders and fliers who reside in New England. These people are willing to share their knowledge with other AMA members and direct popular flying events.

One such individual, Gerry Yarrish, has had a lifetime of experience in modeling, has authored books for people wanting to learn all aspects of the sport, and has reviewed numerous aeromodeling products. Gerry, who is also the senior technical editor for Model Airplane News, sent the following report from the sixth annual Central Connecticut Radio Control Club (CCRCC) Big Biplane Bash.

Central Connecticut Radio Control Club — Big Biplane Bash (Event Report)

  • Date: September 22, 2007 (event moved from June to the fourth Saturday in September to avoid rain and conflicts with other local events)
  • Event name: Big Biplane Bash (formerly CCRCC Multi-Wing Fly-In)
  • Attendance and participation:
  • 46 registered pilots
  • More than 100 models
  • Several hundred spectators throughout the day
  • CCRCC gained four new members

The $10 landing fee included a hot lunch ticket for pilots and a free raffle ticket for prizes donated by generous sponsors. Model Airplane News sponsored award plaques for six Best of Class awards and Best of Show. Prize bags filled with merchandise and several Certificates of Achievement were also awarded.

Notable donations and activities:

  • FX Models (Terryville, Connecticut) donated two laser-etched acrylic trophies for the rubber-powered free flight "Spirit of Modeling" event.
  • HobbyTown USA (New Milford, Connecticut) donated more than 75 balsa fliers that were given to pilots; many pilots’ children served as mechanics and pilots in that event.
  • Prizes included radios, engines, kits, and hardware with a combined cash value close to $4,000.

Pilots attended from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York State, Long Island, New Jersey, Vermont, Virginia, and one participant from the United Kingdom, making the Bash an international event.

Gerry Yarrish, his family, and event helpers thank everyone who contributed to the event’s success.
