AMA News District I - 2010/04

New Year's Day is always an exciting day for those of us in this part of the Northeast, and this year was no exception.

Event report (Carl Vogel, District I Associate Vice President)

Billed as the "Hottest Winter Event in the District," the Discover Flying R/C Club members again proved that the event is everything they say it is. Good weather, mild temperatures, and calm winds enticed more than 100 pilots, guests, and spectators who came from numerous northeast clubs, bringing more than 60 aircraft—from micro electrics and foamies of all types to warbirds, aerobatic models, giant scale, and even helicopters—to the Marstons Mills R/C flying field at the Cape Cod Airport to participate in this stellar biennial event.

The flying started promptly at 9 a.m., with the first official flight of 2010 made by Discover member Bill Scott, and continued non-stop all day long.

This annual event is hosted jointly by the Discover Flying R/C Club and our sister club, the Otis Model Aero Club of Falmouth, Massachusetts, and has been held for more than 30 years, rain, snow, or shine. It has never been canceled due to weather. It continues to grow in popularity and attendance each year and is considered a major Northeast winter RC event. Its location alternates each year with the Otis club's flying field.

Hot chili is always the main course of the day and a tradition at this event. This year it was provided by Jim and Sheryl Fournier, accompanied by:

  • corn breads
  • hot coffee
  • hot chocolate
  • brownies
  • cookies
  • other goodies provided by volunteers and contributors

Absolutely no one goes hungry or cold.

This year's event was the biggest Frost Fly yet and by far one of the best events of the year. We look forward to it every year as it's pretty much the last chance for flying we get until spring. Next January 1, the event will be hosted by the Otis club at its field in Falmouth, so be sure to mark your calendar, bring a plane and a healthy appetite, and join us for a truly great event.

Many thanks go to Discover's new president, John Miller, along with Tony Fajao, Jim Fournier, and all of the other members of the Discover club for inviting us to this premier event.

Consider attending this event next year. Cape Cod is usually a bit warmer than other parts of New England during the winter months. Add to this two great hosting clubs and this is a definite prescription for a good time.

Friendship, flying, and fun are what District I continues to be all about. I hope to see you at some of our 2010 events.
