172 MODEL AVIATION
APPLE CORPS Flying Club, Inc. held a
fly-in to welcome a member back after an
accident. Approximately 25-30 modelers
attended and a number of them received
prizes donated by local businesses and
associated hobby merchandisers.
I understand there was nearly $1,000
raised which will be used for a plaque in the
new wing to be built for the rehabilitation
center that helped the member to get back
on his feet.
Everyone had a good time, especially
with the noon barbecue catered by a local
merchant. The club thinks this may be a
yearly event to help other needy causes.
That would be a good way to get started on
attaining Leader Club status. Let’s wish
them the best.
The Apple Corps club has a nice field
with a mountain backdrop in western North
Carolina. It’s “kinda” hard to find a flat spot
big enough in “them thar hills.”
A picture of the flightline at the Apple Corps
club includes Pete Fisher flying, David Gill
serving as the spotter, and Carter Pounder
returning to pits.
Toby Gaither attempted the balloon bust
during the event.
Jay minded the impound for the fly-in.
A balloon-bust kill by Perry Hubbard.
During the fly-in Brian Hannah put on a 42%
International Miniature Aerobatic Club-style
demonstration.

A nice view of the flightline during the fly-in.
This special
visitor also
attended the
Apple Corps
club’s event.
The special visitor and master. Is it radio
controlled?
On another note, I want to congratulate the
Leader Clubs retaining their status for
another year and especially the new clubs
joining them. Keep up the good work.
As I write this, we are already into 2007
and there will be a membership meeting at
Joe Nall again this year on Thursday, May
17 at 7 p.m. Come join in, ask questions,
and meet some of the officers.
I hope AMA’s new Executive Director
Jim Cherry plans to be there. If so, come
welcome him and come by the AMA tent
under the big oak tree. I understand a
number of the district vice presidents plan
to attend as well.
I want to thank all the clubs for sending me
their newsletters. They are informative and
enjoyable. It helps me keep up when I
cannot go to every event.
Until next time, go take a kid flying.
